Quick Help/FAQ with Coach (rollout completed)

Here's a quick rundown for Coach:

  • It has been released to everyone, which means the progress bar is now gone.

  • There is an A/B test running for some, which allows you to see how much XP you need to reach the next level in any language (XP information available on your profile page.)

  • For those that do not have this test feature, follow pinkodoug's instructions.

  • What happens if you do not activate Coach? As far as I have seen over the past couple of weeks, nothing. You still have to earn 1 XP anyway, but Coach should not interfere, as I know some users have done so with no problem.

  • Is the progress bar coming back? We do not know. At this point, we just have to wait and see.

  • Do streak freezes work? See Katrina's post.

  • Can you turn Coach off once activated? No, it is permanent.

You can ask any further questions, and I will try to answer to the best of my ability.

Can someone explain to me how many people and in how many languages people thought that it would be a good idea to remove the ability to track how many xp's you have gained in each language each day.

I'm certain I am not the only person who keeps track of each language separately and not just as part of a grand total (although as well as).

If I now do random sessions on mobile in different languages how am I supposed to keep track of the individual scores?

I'm baffled you create a great platform for language learning and you keep it free. Better still you make this available on ios and android. You make more languages available "Great".

You then mess around not adding features but removing a very basic and crucial part of peoples ability to keep a progress chart of individual languages that i'm sure people will want to learn at different rates.

I'm just lost for words on how people thought this was a good idea.

Response welcome

Probably not exactly Duo staff's intention. That's why they are trying to remedy the situation.

Just by basic mathematics, as the "total earned today" for each language is not included on the app either.

I'm just lost for words on how people thought this was a good idea.

Live and learn...I bet it won't be done like this again.

""If I now do random sessions on mobile in different languages how am I supposed to keep track of the individual scores?""

""Just by basic mathematics, as the "total earned today" for each language is not included on the app either.""

My point was that on return to the pc I would be able to track the points I had earned on a mobile device as on the pc I use a spreadsheet to keep track for longer than a week but that is messy to keep track of on the move.

But all in all "THANK YOU" for at least understanding and being a little sympathetic about the issue.

Right, it is messy now, but we hope it will work out eventually. :P

You're welcome. I'm in the same boat. I want the progress bar back, too. But, I know now, with staff listening, that there isn't much more than I can do. So, I'm just sitting tight.

"I'm just lost for words on how people thought this was a good idea."

I'm guessing here (because I'm not exactly clear on what this Coach feature is, though that's never stopped me before), but it sounds like they're trying to find some way to persuade - from their point of view - more of those people who sign up for a course actually to complete it rather than dropping out because they're not making any progress. From what I read, It's a big problem with online courses, and if lingo-carrots don't work, you reach for the stick.

I suspect that one of the problems is that DL, like the vast majority of service-providing sites these days, requires you to register and start using the site before you know if it's really for you. It's not possible to try out the offering on a no-commitment basis, so a significant proportion of those signing up and starting a language are probably no more than idly curious. No amount of cajoling after registration is going to motivate people who weren't seriously interested in learning a language in the first place.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Rappelke

Maybe they (all) need an option "Just looking, thanks."

Actually there is a demo or preview before a user registers. Besides most features wouldn't really work well or at all if there was no way of tracking who a user is.

How exactly would they keep track of what one learns and still respect their privacy if they have no unique identifier of the person?

That I agree on. Online anything requires self-discipline, which is never entirely popular. ;)

Great idea for a thread, Alexis. Hopefully this will help keep the Coach questions centralized.

Might want to add that the A/B makes the XP information available on your profile page. That's not necessarily an obvious place to look for it.

November 3, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

Added, thanks.

November 3, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/galaxyrocker

Exactly. It's not an obvious place, so why put it there? Why not just incorporate it into Coach so you can see it where you can also see your skills?

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/writchie4

If it's on the profile page, then other people can see your progress too. I understand the motivation for putting it there, but it's definitely unintuitive and it would be nice if the same information was shown on the home page.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/galaxyrocker

Well, I know it used to be possible for others to see your progress anyways. I could constantly check another person's profile and see how much exp they had for a given language. Now, I can't even see how much I have, let alone calculate how many skills it'd take to reach the next level.

Thank you Alexis for putting this together!

There is an A/B test running for some, which allows you to see how much XP you need to reach the next level in any language (XP information available on your profile page.)

This seems to be shown only when you learn a language from English. e.g. for the account below, XP for German from English is shown but not for English from German. I wonder why this is, and how they analyze their data. Do they ignore the points this user will get for English from German, because for this course XP is not shown?

Alt

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

It's in A/B testing, and I believe most X to English courses are excluded from these tests.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/alfasprint

Same here. Shown in english, not in french.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/LiFicreator45

that is not shown for me that's why I can't find how much XPs I have, Why don't I have that?

Here are two other questions you might want to add: Do streak freezes work? (Yes, see my recent post: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/5306469$comment_id=5306680) and Can you turn Coach off once activated? (No, so don't turn on unless you are fine with always having it!). Great discussion thread, though! :)

Thanks, added.

""and Can you turn Coach off once activated? (No, so don't turn on unless you are fine with always having it!). Great discussion thread, though! :)""

But don't worry for all the people who didn't want this feature (including me) they have forced it on us!!!

Well done for that, NOT

November 3, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/-Katrina.-

Um, what do you mean? I can't be helped that everyone has Coach, I'm just saying you don't have to activate the Coach. I'm not activating the Coach, and that is just opinion.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Grumpylingo

And that was my opinion until they just did it anyway.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/tariqnisarahmed

Maybe if they made Coach tell jokes or do clutsy virtual comedy, like Coach (the old sitcom) then it would actually be entertaining and thus motivational. So activate Coach, set a target and reach that target, unlock one site gag. Set a tougher target and reach it, unlock a more complex or entertaining gag. And so on.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

Heck, have it like Pacman. More points, more cutscenes. ;) Maybe Duo will settle down with a nice girl finally.

November 4, 2014

Come on, it should at least be ticklish...

November 4, 2014

Actually there is more information in a wiki page:

Oddly enough it is not in the wiki faq.

Ignore this question if it has been answer before.

Is the problem with the streak freeze not working after the coach implementation solved? I have to admit I'm a little nervous now about my streak even though I'm not planning to set any goal (ever I guess...). Thanks.

November 5, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

I'm not completely sure yet. It might be, but I'm not confident enough in a yes. Since you aren't planning to set it, it should be fine.

November 5, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Eey91

Ok, thanks.

November 6, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/writchie4

Yeah, I wish we could get some staff feedback RE: this. The thought that the Streak Freeze might not work is rather terrifying. Even though I've never used mine, I like having the safety net there.

November 6, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/LiFicreator45

sorry but I ca't find were it shows the XPs I can't find it on my home page.

You can follow the instructions above.

Can the coach be turned off after being activated?

November 3, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

Nope, I would have turned it off days ago. :/ The same thing happened with the Coach in the iOS app a few weeks ago. The Coach is, for now, permanent.

November 3, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/tinnmel

About a week ago, someone posted how to access the code and turn off the coach.

November 3, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

Yep, but the Coach is no longer an experiment, so that is not possible.

November 3, 2014

Good thing I did that a while ago.

November 4, 2014

Many thanks for this update Alexis. I wish we could get this sort of feedback for all the A/B tests as they get completed.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

You're welcome. I know this one would have questions, so I wanted to head them off here so everyone won't scramble for answers.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/galaxyrocker

Honestly, why keep it on the profile page? Keep the exp to next level where the skills are.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

I've puzzled over this as well....I still don't know.

November 4, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/galaxyrocker

That's the one thing that doesn't make sense about this. Coach is nice, because it does tell you exactly how long you have to keep up your streak. And by just setting it to one, it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you complete something.

But hiding away the exp bar and keeping it separate from the skills is just so weird, since the skills are where you actually practice. And it's not like there wasn't room - the previous bar could easily have gone about the "strengthen skills" button, beneath the coach
