'have you finished the work' is a proper translation also, i think.... anyuone have any other comments that could set me straight?

Absolutely. I think you can also say "Have you finished work?", if we are referring to a job (employment), rather than a specific task. At the end of the day it is natural to ask "Have you finished work?", to ask if someone is free from their job for the day.
