Does, "I had gone to Brazil in 2008" work?

I had been to Brazil in 2008 = eu estive no Brasil em 2008 / Eu tinha estado no Brasil em 2008. I had gone to Brazil in 2008 = eu tinha ido ao Brasil em 2008

Ok I understand all that. Why does this say "Eu tinha conhecido o Brasil em 2008." then? Is this more "I had visited Brazil in 2008"?

I found that weird too. A literal translation would be "I had known Brazil in 2008", but it sounds like it does not occur anymore. So, how can that happen? "Eu conheci o Brasdil em 2008" sounds more natural. That was the start point. Maybe in some context this sentence could go... But i havent made up my mind yet...
