Since toren has the article de, why is this sentence not "Die is een grote toren"?

In an "it/this/that is ..." construction, Dutch always uses the "het"-form, regardless of whatever noun follows next.

  • Het is de toren - It is the tower
  • Het zijn de torens - They are the towers
  • Dit is de toren - This is the tower
  • Dat is de toren - That is the tower
