https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EzGarner

No you dont have a girlfriend because you cant get one duo

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/coolmondude

The electronic voice is trying to flirt with me!!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JGSteggall

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EmojieQueen

How do say "Do you really want to be my boyfriend?"

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Talos_the_Cat

I'll guess «¿Quieres de verdad ser mi novio?»

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Poopoo866632

¿De verdad quieres ser mi novio? (That's the translation. :) )

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Royal_Gopnik

i don't understand why everyone hates the sarcastic comments

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Chilidog22

Wait what if you (NetwideOFFICIAL) are being sarcastic here?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Wheatley123

One time i was sarcastic and it did not end well

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jacko70

I translated this question as"have you a girlfriend"?,which is perfectly correct.Dl wants me to answer "have you got a girlfriend"?,which is USA English. It's a very strange situation when British or Irish English is wrong and USA English is right.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lsfr77

You can't say "Have you a girlfriend?", it's either "Do you have a girlfriend?" or "Have you got a girlfriend?" (with the latter actually being especially common in Great Britain, BTW). ;)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/George418878

What about the children's rhyme "Have you any wool?"

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/wx.1b73c227d57f9

We purposefully use incorrect grammar to help fit the songs rythm. I wouldn't use.'Have you any wool' or 'Have you a girlfriend' unless I was trying to sound like a posh Englishman from the 1890s

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ROFLChief

Girl, I KNOW you better be a human right now

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/corasundae

We don't use that kind of grammar anymore.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pokepep

Ah, that rhyme was the ❤❤❤❤. Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full. And you're right, it's old-timey-ish to put it that way but still completely valid.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ritwik_mango

shouldn't it be tienes una novia?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/rspreng

That would be asking if you had (only) one girlfriend ;)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TheOneAndOnlyBK

Hopefully that's all they have... :P

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Nathan723023

LOL, your so correct. :|. But that's what I was gonna say..

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TheArgo2

you are wrong.Una means one, dude.[I don't mean you rspreng]

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Nathan723023

You're the one that's wrong here.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/6Keys

That would be asking if she had more than one in a sense!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TheArgo2

also, so it's Uno?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/S._Nicole_J.

No, its not really necessary because you know that it is "a girlfriend" because novia is in a singular form

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AsaSchille

[from what I can tell] "¿Tienes una novia?" in Spanish makes it sound like the emphasis is on the "una", so it sounds like you're asking more about the number than yes/no. "Do you have a girlfriend?" vs "Do you have A girlfriend (or some other number)?". Would love some more detailed input on this one for sure.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kyletmueller

I thought novia meant girlfriend (duo puts bride as a secondary definiton), but someone who knows more than me said that it means fiancé. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/neiht20

From what I was taught and according to my dictionary, "novia" means girlfriend (http://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen=novia), but yes I've also heard that it can mean "fiancée" as well depending on the country.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TheArgo2

fiancee?Now that's cool!:)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LoesVanBos

any chance you might fetch that person and ask them for a couple examples? :D it certainly sounds like something that might work, but I can't recall ever hearing it. bonus fact: a similar word in occitan (noviota) also means a bride

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Charlotte546928

I thought that Duolingo put "Bride, Girlfriend, and Fiancee" as options when you click on the word.

BTW, just because the person knows some things in Spanish more, doesn't mean that they are always correct.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tequillo

Wouldn't short "Got a girlfriend" do?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Andreaja69

Perfectly understandable, but a very lazy and ungrammatical way of speaking.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PennyJC

No tienes novia porque soy hetero

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PennyJC

No tienes una novia porque soy hetero

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/xii_Yello

My parents want me to learn Spanish on this website. Little do they know...

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BaurAubaki

There is no article in a spanish sentence

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JuevesHuevos

With "tener" it's okay to leave out the article, because "a" is implied.

Tienes novia? = Do you have a girlfriend?

Tienues una novia? = Do you have one girlfriend? (or two?)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Bigchungus_1234

where are you super dog

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChristiaWh

No but i have a guy friend

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JordySwinn

Why is it not "¿Tú tienes una novia?"

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Andreaja69

It could be, but you don't need the subject pronoun 'tú'; the 's' on the end of 'tienes' indicates the subject.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ROFLChief

Wait, don't answer that one... my background check that I put in a few months ago shows that you have one.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MalyciaAsh

She's saying she's not lesbian.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JosephStow2

No, but that's why I'm here

[deactivated user]

Why are they teaching me this??

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Im_A_Gnome

I'm in school and I'm getting my Chromebook asked me if I got a girlfriend...

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChikinNuget231

That seems kinda desperate for a girl to be asking a guy if you got a gf

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JGSteggall

No, but i have a crush

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/alvaro_347

Yes, and i love her so much

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/saintTyndaleVIII

Wouldn't it be Tienes una novia?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/nmHNM5oF

This lesson was worth it just for the comments.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AsaSchille

Is there a gender neutral term? What if you know that the listener is bisexual but not their relationship status? (in English, we have "significant other", or maybe "partner"). Realistically I would just ask "are you single" or something in that direction.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jonesnori

I have heard that there are people using an "e" or "x" ending to create a gender-neutral version of various words. It's not settled yet, and I'm sure there are as many Spanish speakers objecting to these as English speakers objecting to singular "they". I personally support both, and prefer the "e" ending.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/swift-tutle

No, I don't have any girlfriend, and I am very happy about that!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KristiAlex3

    Everyone's stupid

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Caiden2106

why can't you just say 'are you single?'

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Squeempy

Damn, duo must be really lonely, hes asking all these people when he barely knows them

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MarieHollo4

I did write exactly what the answer said

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Fade963451

Ugh she's gonna go strait out guys, not sure how to respond my dear...

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Bobbythekid21

    No, no tengo novia. ☹

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/joyceluna3

    why do we need "got"

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/patlar

Why not - 'have you (got) a girlfriend'?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Royal_Gopnik

Because that is an old structure. American-English speakers generally don't use that; I've only heard British-English speakers use it.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kamlesh275534

Have a girlfriend? So simple as the translation

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BrandonR631980

It only has two words in Español and 5 in Inglés

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ben297478

This lesson is the same three phrases twice...

Hi, duo . I need to ask you a favor. I originlly commited to do an insane amount-20 minutes every day. But I quickly discovered I could not keep it up all week to get that 7 day streak/ red flame at the top of the page. ( The weekends have been the hardest to keep up the routine.) Since I just stupidly kept using up my ingots buying streak-freezes, I finally decided to adjust my expectation according to what I could actually do successfully at 11:58 - I had earned at least a red flame for 5 minutes per day for a whole week, but my andriod phone was to slow to change it propperly because the battery power had dipped to low just before I had to do this so I could't correct it, for this week, coming to a close here soon. Could you at Duolingo please correct it for me? (So that I can mantain a 7 day streak of 5 minutes per day?) If you can... Thank-you, I would be VERY grateful!!☺

If Novia means girlfriend, would "novio" translate to Boyfriend?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/WINGSOFFIREFAN2

No, I do not have a girlfriend.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/A.BruceBor

    This exercise is broken.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RHanisch

    Hopefully I do. .-.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MiarS2

Why isnt it : "Tienes una novia" ?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Cici455680

This reminds me of a song XD Any STAY/skz fans here?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MeleanaCha

You can't just go up to a random guy asking this you have to know first

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MasterOfKrynn

Duo apparently doesn't accept 'Do you have a GF?'.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Christianna.Vl

Why don't we say ¿tienes una novia? ? Don't we use the article una?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Squeempy

Damn, duo must be really lonely, he's asking all these people when he barely knows them.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/starrieeyes

Guys, come on. Please try to be mindful of the little children on this chat. You don't need to make bad comments on here. Do that somewhere else or don't do it. They don't need to see all your crap. Funny and sarcastic is okay but a couple of these are not for little ones to see. I know I wouldn't want my kids to see some of them. Thank you.
