100 day streak & my death

Today marks my 100 day streak. I've been on Duolingo for about 10 months, so I thought this day would come sooner. And to celebrate my 100 day streak, Duolingo gave me this sentence:

Anyway, right now I'm a C1 in Spanish. I never would have come this far without Duolingo so I want to take a moment to thank Luis, the Duolingo staff, the moderators etc. You guys are amazing ^_^

EDIT: OK. This is really getting creepy:

Is this normal?

EDIT #2: Everything's OK. I survived the night. I lived to a 101 day streak. I'm assuming that Duo is preparing me for when I need to use Spanish. If I move to Spain and become a serial killer, I'll be prepared.

Thankfully, I did. I have lived on to see myself with a 101 day streak. Congratulations on your streak too! 403 days. Wow. I hope to get that far some day.

That's why I already had 4 nights full of sweat, fear and despair... ;-)

Thanks for the compliment. It's not tough to maintain a streak that long. All you need is persistence and access to the internet. All the best for you!

grats! did you get to C1 just from duolingo, or using a lot of secondary sources as well? C1 seems really high to me for just duolingo!

You'll never reach C1 by simply using DuoLingo. If you complete your tree and know actively everything that you've learned, you'll have a good A2 level, but nothing more. Even having a good B1-level is possible, but very tough to reach. If you simply want to translate, read or understand the language, B1 is your aim. If you want to speak actively, I highly doubt that you will cross the line to becoming an intermediate user which starts at B1.

I once met a guy who was normal, nothing special and his brain has been working completely normally. But: Being a German native, it only took him 12 months from his first Chinese word to C2. This is possible. But not through DuoLingo. (He was living in China and used the language approx. 10 hours a day, thus 3650 hours in a year).

If you want to reach a higher level than A2/B1, it is mandatory to supplement DuoLingo with various sources, for example those for listening exercises.

Are Germans especially good in learning Chinese, or why did you mention him being a German native?

Because it's incredibly hard to learn Chinese when you are a German native. I wanted to point out that it is still possible and impressive.

Well, I did 8 years of Spanish in school which got me to about an A2, but more importantly, it taught me how Spanish worked. With the basic knowledge and grammar of the language, I was able to learn the vocabulary very quickly with Duolingo. But I also use http://www.studyspanish.com/ and http://www.spanishdict.com/

Also check to see if you have a streak freeze every now and then. I've heard you can use it without realizing (or that Duo sometimes messes up and accidentally takes it away)
