Most everybody knows about the four Romance languages: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and French. And some know about Romanian as a Romance language, but it seems like less know about Catalan. Well, here are a few facts about it, just to increase your knowledge of the language and its people a little.

Catalan is the official (and only language) of the tiny country of Andorra (situated between Spain and France). It is also spoken in areas of Spain, Italy and France. It is also spoken in Catalonia, an autonomous community of Spain. An estimated 9.5 million people speak Catalan.

Barcelona, in my opinion one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, is located in Catalonia, and Catalan is an official language there. Barcelona is a popular tourist location.

I would love to see this language here, and I hope that people will apply :)

I'd love to learn some Catalan! And I wouldn't be surprised if Duolingo adds this in! And if Spain ever grants Catalunya the right to vote for independence, there would be another country in Europe that would speak it!

Occitan would also be a great language about which to learn more! I would like to learn more about Catalan as well :)

I've been studying Catalan for the past month on my own, a duolingo course sure would make things easier, heh.

November 11, 2014

Yeah, I bet! :D How have you been studying it?

November 11, 2014

A mix of memrise, the book Colloquial Catalan, and borrowing sentences from duolingo to translate in a notebook.

November 11, 2014

Ok, awesome! I looked up Catalan for Dummies, but all I could find was a Spanish edition :D

I think I've cracked Duolingo's code for language selection. They are of course dependent on volunteers so if they have an open slot and you have a fanatical team, something like Irish might slip in the back door.

But if you Google the top 25 languages by GDP, you will see that one third of them are already available to English speakers and one third are in development. So selection is by GDP (a rational criteria from business standpoint), and then subject to volunteer availability.

So I expect announcements for Indonesian, Tagalog, Malay and Persian to be coming in the new future ... but no announcement for Catalan.

Please, I would love it for catalan to be available. Even if its just through spanish or french

Let's try to concentrate all supports for "Catalan from French" in one place (in the French forum): ;)

I applied many times to start a Catalan from English Duolingo course. I guess some of you did too. I made a Facebook group to coordinate all of us who want to see this course become a reality. Join!
