No tengo amigos en Duolingo

Does anyone know what benefits there is to be had from following other Duolingers. I have been using Duolingo for several months now. I don't follow anyone and no one follows me. Am I missing something? I would be happy to follow anyone or be followed on this site if I could see a benefit to them or myself, whether that benefit be social, educational or motivational. I would like to hear from people who find this function of the site helpful or otherwise.

I follow people who I have noticed consistently make interesting and helpful posts with a good sense of humor and a caring attitude. Their stuff shows up on my Activity stream, and I like to occasionally click their name and lurk on their profile to see what helpful stuff they've been posting.

Regarding having people follow me, it makes no difference to my own Duo experience at all.

It depends, I personally think it is meant to provide a source of academic competition (as other peoples you are following and their weekly exp. gains are displayed on the leader-board on your homepage)! And it can potentially help you meet and connect with other learners. Hope that helps! :)

I'd say it's mostly for friendly competition between friends. If you don't have friends who duolingo you're not missing out on anything.

I didn't intend to follow anyone or have anyone follow me. It just sort of started happening! I pretty much follow anyone back who starts following me (who seems real) as a sign of friendliness and comradery. I figure it's all good. Since they changed the layout of the page I can't really see the other people anymore and use that "competition" for motivation like I could before they added the coach and he took up so much space. :)

To me it only makes sense if you invite people who you know in real life and for who you care. It is funny to tease them when you have learnt "more" than they or if you have reached a higher level ;D. I also was thinking about following someone in order to achieve a regular language exchange but I figured out that A) I do not want to post my e-mail or skype ID in the main board which is the only place where you can talk with your followers B) I always have to ask the people what`s their native language because at least I am too dumb to find that information if not written in their introduction. So plop, I only use it as a motivation between friends (and to tease them ;))
