I would only use a sentence like that for brain damage/alzheimers/senility. For a hard drive we use the english words hard drive, for usb sdcards and others we say "hukommelseskort"

I think the "storage" part of the dictionary hint might serve to distinguish between the general ability to store and recall past events versus the recall of a specific event.

Exactly. "Hukommelse" would be your memory (abilities, function) in general whereas "et minde" would be a specific memory.
