Dutch(Netherlands) Speaking Group

Is there anyone learning Dutch or learning English from Dutch that would like to start a talking group with me so that we can practice our skills?

Hi guys! Practicing Dutch with each other is a great idea, I fully approve of this thread.

Unfortunately this message board is not an appropriate place to exchange Skype addresses or any other personal information. We have been asked by the Duolingo staff to delete all posts containing such information.

Also, please try to keep your language a little polite. There are many children using Duolingo. If you want to learn Dutch swear words, a quick Google search should help you out.

Learn on!

Ik ben Nederlands. Als jullie hulp nodig hebben of handige televisieprogramma's in het Nederlands hoor ik het graag! Veel succes met deze mooie taal!

Zijn er websites voor Nederlands televisieprogramma's??

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KwintenF.

http://m.nos.nl is the Dutch national television. http://m.deredactie.be is the national news website from the Dutch speakers in Belgium.

On both sites you can find little (news)video's. I think it's good to try to understand them.

Good luck!

Ik heb naar de radio geluisterd en veel over Zwarte Piet gehoord. Ik versta sommige dingen dat zij hebben gezegt maar niet alles. Waarom zijn sommige mensen "boos" (is dat de juiste woord?) Is niet Zwarte Piet een "helper" met SinterKlaus?

Mensen zijn boos (angry) omdat zwarte piet blackface heeft. People think that's racist and them being assistants of Sinterklaas reminds people a lot of slavery. It's kind of a big discussion here, it's all over the news.

What LaraMuder said is right! It would be a symbol of the black people being the slaves of the 'good' white people.

Mensen zijn boos op de koning (boos op, not boos met, though i understand the confusion with "being angry with someone") omdat hij geen kant kiest in de discussie. He refuses to say whether or not he agrees with pieten being stereotypes and racist.

Bedankt voor jouw antwoorden. Ik heb veel gehoord over deze dingen. Waarom zijn mensen boos met de koning over Zwarte Piet? Dat ook begrijp ik niet.

Ok. nu begrijp ik het. En bedant voor de hulp met " boos op".

Hi guys!

I am Kwinten and I live in Flanders, Belgium. In my country is Dutch, with about 6 million speakers, the most-spoken language. The other official languages are German and French.

I want to tell you that you can ask me all questions concerning Dutch, which is considered as a difficult language. I think it is hard, but not impossible though!

A first tip I can give you: When learning Dutch, always try to find the 'etymological' background of a word. That's the word's history: It can help you a lot, surely if you know English or German, which are closely related to eachother. But not only languages of the 'German' family are related to Dutch, also the Roman languages, derived from Latin, have their influence in Dutch.

Good luck!

Je mag me altijd hulp vragen!

Mijn naam is Michael, ik ben negentien, en ik woon in Pennsylvania. I fell in love with the Netherlands and I've been working on learning her language. It is a trying task at times, but at least I'm very close friends with a Dutch person. Still, I'd like to befriend more people who speak or are interested in speaking it.

I see that the Danish group has a Skype chat which meets every Saturday. Why couldn't we do something like that for Dutch? Instead of using a personal Skype account, one of the Danish admins created an independent Skype account strictly for their group. If you'd like to see, this is their thread: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/4318599

Sounds like a good idea, but I wouldn't know where to start.

One of the Dutch administrators would have to volunteer to arrange it and inform their superiors. So if one of them is willing to, I think I can speak for the community when I say we'll be very grateful for that.

Ik ben goed, ❤❤❤ gaat het ermee?

November 14, 2014

You cannot say: Ik ben goed. You have to say: met mij gaat het goed. Ik ben goed is a form of bragging, for example: kan je voetballen? Ja ik ben goed.

Ik ben heel geïnteresseerd over dit. Laten we proberen in het Nederlands te praten?

November 14, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/somelauw

Het moet zijn: "Ik ben hier heel geïnteresseerd in" of "Ik heb hier interesse voor"

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/dinnernugget

Bedankt! Gebruiken "in/er" etc. is niet te makkelijk. Ik heb meer ervaring nodig ermee.

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/somelauw

"Het gebruik van "in/er" is niet (ge)makkelijk. Ik moet hier meer mee oefenen."

Ik ben het met je eens dat het gebruik van voorzetsels als "in/er" vaak wat moeilijk is als je een nieuwe taal leert. Geen zorgen, na een tijdje zul je de patronen vanzelf oppikken.

I agree that the use of prepositions when learning a new language can often be quite a challenge at first. Don't worry, after a while you'll pick up the patterns automatically.

November 16, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/dinnernugget

Spreek je Nederlands als een "native language"? Of heb je het geleerd? Na voorzetsels, voor mij is het plekken in zinnen voor worden het duurste deel. Als je ook een student bent, ❤❤❤ lang duurde het voor jouw om hen te leren?

November 16, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/somelauw

Dutch is my native language. I haven't finished the Dutch tree in duolingo, but the reason for that was Duolingo not accepting correct solutions because it was still in beta, so it put me somewhere in the middle after doing the placement test. I don't remember how long it took for me to learn prepositions in English since I learned this very gradually. When learning Spanish, initially I had to get used to how words like 'a', 'en' and 'como' were used, but now I get that right most of time and I have been learning spanish for only 2.5 months.

By the way, 'duur' in dutch can only be used in the context of 'expensive'. 'moeilijk' and 'lastig' are words that fit the context. Use 'woorden' when plural of 'woord'(word in english) is meant and 'worden' as the verb to become. 'plekken'(places) is a noun only, 'plaatsen'(places or to place) can be used as a noun and a verb.

How do I know whether to use "De" or "Het"?

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jcarlosmjr

I think there is no general rule to define the correct article. However, there are some hints. This thread by the Dutch team is very instructive: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/3732938

You can also use this site to verify if the word you're using is a de-word or a het-word: http://woordenlijst.org/

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SJBlood

From what I understand, het is used for singular neutral nouns and de in any other place. Duolingo doesn't say this, though.

You can't actually know when to use which - you pretty much have to learn them ...

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KwintenF.

Actually, in most of the time you need to use 'de'. 'Het' is like the German 'sächlich'. You use it for a minority of words.

You always use 'het' for a diminutive form, but I do not know whether you've learned that already.

Good luck!

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/cdbest

wat is "a diminutive form"?

November 15, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KwintenF.

That's what we use when something is small or to expres our contempt. It is basically formed by adding 'je' to the stem of a word (+S for plural).

E.g.: Hond (Dog) Stad (City) Hondje (Little dog) Stadje (Little city) Hondjes (Little dogs) Stadjes (Little cities)

Hi everybody! English is my first language and I'm learning (trying to learn) Dutch. I'm finding everything very confusing, haha.

Can anyone tell me the difference between 'eet and eten', 'drinkt and drinken' het and de' 'wij and we' and last but not least 'je and jij'

Thank you!

Hello there! I think this page will be very helpful, it has links to many grammar explanations. Here is one on verb conjugation ("eet", "eten", etc) and here is one on pronouns (jij/je, wij/we).
