Differences between the 'whys' in Portuguese

In Portuguese, there are four types of "whys." They are used in different occasions and is very easy to get confused. See the difference between them:

Por que (separado sem acento) > You use this form to ask questions or when it may be replaced by "motive" or "reason":

  1. Por que você fez isso? > Why did you do that?
  2. Não sei por que não quero ir. > Do not know why I do not want to go.

Porque (junto sem acento) > You use this form to answer questions:

  1. Fiz isso porque era necessário > I did it because it was necessary
  2. Não fui ao cinema porque tenho que estudar para a prova. > I did not go to movies because I have to study for the test.

Por quê (separado com acento) > You use this form at the end of the period, after the point or comma.

  1. Vocês não comeram tudo?Por quê? > You did not eat it all? Why?
  2. Andar cinco quilômetros, por quê? Vamos de carro. > Walking five kilometers, why? Let the car.

Porquê (junto com acento) > You use this form when the "why" is a noun function. Is always accompanied by article, pronoun, adjective or numeral.

  1. Se ele fez isso, teve um porquê > If he did it, he had a reason
  2. Gostaria de entender o porquê eu tenho que ir > I would like to understand why I have to go

Ajuda sim, com certeza. Só uma pergunta, tem algum erro de inglês muito grave aqui?

It is very well written, and if there are any errors to be corrected they are quite minor:

  • "... and is very easy to get confused"

use "it is" (or "it's") instead of "is".

  • "Do not know why ..."

    Use "I do not" (or "I don't").

  • "... at the end of the period"

Replace "the period" with "a sentence".

  • "Walking five kilometers, why? Let the car."

Maybe better as: "Walk five kilometers, why? Let's go by car".

  • "... the "why" is a noun function. Is always ..."

Could be " ... the "why" functions as a noun. It is always ...".

Maybe "Estou aprendendo português e não sei muitas palavaras, então só posso responder em inglês (neste momento)". (I'm guessing "contestao" is related to the Spanish word for answer).
