I believe that I was once taught that, in Spanish, occupations and familial roles were to be used without indefinite articles, but here on Duolingo I have seen many instances of that very usage, so now I am a bit confused.

I'm not sure about family roles, but with occupations, you would only use the article if an adjective was attached.
Soy maestro.
Soy un maestro bueno.

The rule is "No personal a after the verb ser"

Because you are not referring to a particular person when you say 'father' - you are using it as a noun

Can it translate as "I am going to be a parent?"

Aw! I said "I'm going to be a daddy" and they marked it wrong because it was too "cute" I guess.

Daddy/dad/pop/papa is papá in Spanish. Not to be confused with the Spanish word papa (no accent) which means potato. :D

Or el papa which I believe means the Pope.

Awk when a woman is speaking this

Difficult for non-native english speakers. "I'm going to be father" is an error, solely because I forgot the "a" before "father". Its not usual in German, neither.

So is 'padre' in the singular not ever translated as parent? It was marked wrong.

Can someone explain why they have female voices for definitely male sentences... It's unrealistic

March 5, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/skepticalways

Coral, it isn't meant to be realistic, just a teaching tool to use subjects, verbs and objects together. Remember the sentence "I am a penguin?" Maybe you could use that to describe a costume for a Halloween party! "I am going to be a penguin that night!" ;-)

I wouldn't read anything into the voice they use. Some sentences are about children, some are about elderly people, some are about animals. We can hardly expect them to match each sentence to a perfect voice!.

The first words I teach to someone learning English are get, got, gotta, hafta, and how ya doin'. Those are the first things they're going to hear yet get and got are taught way too late and the rest are not in the book. Gonna is a real word. We use it all the time. "Correct" or not, they have to be able to understand it.

This could also be a child playing house. I know, I know, they usually use "era" for play.

Why are they pronouncing the V all of a sudden? It used to be "boy" instead of "voy".

March 3, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/gernt
  • 1602

Since the V is pronounced between the lips like B, they can sound alike. Some areas pronounce them distinct, and in some, Las Vegas comes out just like Las Begas. So you have V de vaca, y B de burro.

how would I will become a father be translated to spanish? not like that?

September 15, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/gernt
  • 1602

No? Try putting it into Google translate. But what's tricky is the "become" because that depends so much on context. See: http://www.linguee.es/ingles-espanol/traduccion/will+become.html

January 26, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/shushurra

I' ve translated :" I am going to become a father", and it us marked wrong. Why?

November 19, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/gernt
  • 1602

That's fine when you're translating for human ears, but I guess it would be hard on the editors to list "become" as a translation for ser under special circumstances. You can always suggest it be added.

Why we have to use 'a' in but not in Spanish?

December 20, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/gernt

I don't know, but it's a very general rule and one that's relatively easy to get used to - i.e. Soy dentista = I'm a dentist.
