Is it possible to learn both to and from English?

I'm a native English speaker, but I've been curious about the English-learning trees on Duolingo. The other day I clicked on the option to learn English from French, thinking it would be fun to see what the lessons were like and might help me improve my French too. When I did this, I noticed immediately that my other languages had disappeared! I quickly selected one of them again, and found (to my relief) that they came back with my old skill levels, but now I'm wondering: is it purposely impossible for both trees to function at once? And if I had actually started an English tree (I never left the settings page) would my other languages have been wiped out? Thanks!

I am doing English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Yes, you do have to sorta sign in again and select the other, but they are both there. Note that your total number of coins will reflect those earned in the sections together. I imagine that it will become easier to switch from one to another ... Luis is doing 6 or so different languages. :-)
