Why isn't it "the newspapers"? And when does "the" fit?

the newspapers would be tidningarna. It's just not the definite form in the source sentence.

Its "the newspapers" because "the women" read them so there is more then one.

It is not "the newspapers", it is "newspapers", for the reason given by Arnauti above.

The women could conceivably be reading the newspaper together, but in that case the Swedish sentence would be Kvinnorna läser tidningen. Or, if it any old newspaper not a specific one: Kvinnorna läser en tidning = The women are reading a newspaper.

So kvinna = woman kvinnan = the woman kvinnor = women kvinnorna = the women?
