My top 25 German Bands recommendations. (Now please add yours)
Hi! Just thought I would list some of the really cool German bands (who actually sing in german) I've found thus far.
If you have some suggestions along the same lines, I'm always looking for more! Please include a short description of the bands style, just to have a general idea :)
1- ABWÄRTS : Good 80's style punk rock, with some new-wavy, grungy overtones.
2- BÖHSE ONKELZ : Falls somewhere between metal and hard rock, Metallica-like.
3- CASPER : Hard to describe, rap/ hip-hop but with a cool, hoarse voice.
4- DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER: Melodic metal, vocals are very clear.
5- DIE ÄRZTE: Well known punk band
6- DIE TOTEN HOSEN: Well known punk band
7- DORNENREICH: melodic black metal band with some interesting folk elements
8- EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN: Industrial, 80's experimental band.
9- HEINO: Needs no introduction.
10- IN EXTREMO: Medieval metal with twisted-traditionnal folsky sound. Awesome vocals.
11- JENNIFER ROSTOCK: Fun pop-punk band, kind of sounds like old No Doubt
12- KNORKATOR: combines heavy metal with comical elements.
13- KRAFTKLUB: Very catchy new rock, reminds me of British bands like Louis XIV and the Fratellis
14- LETZTE INSTANZ: Somewhat similar to Rammstein, with violin and Cello.
15- ONKEL TOM ANGELRIPPER: This dude is awesome. Trash metal covers of traditionnal songs.
16- RAMMSTEIN: needs no introduction.
17- SCHANDMAUL: Medieval folk rock band, varied sound, very accessible vocals etc.
18- SUBWAY TO SALLY: Medieval goth metal, very clear and interesting vocals.
19- TERRORGRUPPE: Punk band. Sounds like NOFX.
20- THE WISE GUYS: Fun Barbershop quartet, pop, catchy, à capella songs.
21- TOCOTRONIC: Grungy, lo-fi band with simple lyrics.
22- TON STEINE SCHERBEN: My personal favorite. Awesome politically charged lyrics of revolution and change, incredible vocalist. The Clash meets the Rolling Stones.
23-UDO JÜRGENS: Versatile crooner, somewhat similar to Heino.
24- WIZO: Pure punk. Nasally, bratty vocals. Awesome.
25- XMAL DEUTSCHLAND : Interesting new-wave band with female vocalist.
Of bands you haven't listed, I enjoy Oomph! which sort of kicked off the style of music that Rammstein codified and way on the other end of the spectrum Die Prinzen who are kind of goofy but who I enjoy probably because my German teacher in high school would play them all the time (My sister and I still play "Heute ha ha habe ich Geburstag" for each other on our birthdays years after we've both been out of school).
Oomph! is my favourite German band :D I prefer them over Rammstein. "Die Geister die ich rief": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvJuQ6oR-6U They just have so many awesome songs - Labyrinth, Das letzte Streichholz, Deine Eltern, Bonobo, Beim ersten Mal tut's immer weh (music video is a bit disturbing), Such mich, find mich, I simply can't decide which one I like most :D
And yes, Rammstein said they took their inspiration from Oomph, but I think the difference is that Oomph songs are more melodic, leaning towards industrial rock with some industrial metal, whereas Rammstein is industrial metal.
Of the bands that I've listened to so far on your list I've especially appreciated Casper and Jennifer Rostock. Thanks for the recommendations.
Here's 16 of my favourites. Bands within the electronic music genres I'll call "synth" regardless if it's more towards dark wave, electronic body music or industrial for example.
And One Synthpop
Das Ich Synth
Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft Synth
Calva Y Nada Synth
Eisbrecher Neue Deutsche Härte
Lebanon Hanover Post punk
Rammstein Neue Deutsche Härte
Stahlmann Neue Deutsche Härte
Tyske Ludder Synth
Unzucht Neue Deutsche Härte
Welle: Erdball Synth
Xmal Deutschland Post punk
Seeed! This reggae style group records in English too, but I think their music is better in German. Ding and Dickes B might be some of their most well known songs.
Die Firma makes very nice rap music. And also Fettes Brot and and one older group would be Die Fantastischen Vier (but I don't really like their old stuff). I liked the album Numma Eyns by DJ Tomekk and some music by Samy Deluxe. One well known rap artist is Sido, but I'm not very much into him.
I like your descriptions of the bands. So far I only have one band that I like that sings in German, but I will go through your list. The band is Stereo Total: Multilingual, retro meets electronic, with sampling, and theremin. They mostly sing in French and German, but also in Spanish, English and Japanese. Here is a song from them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fodY7SKJ0_8
I love German metal, so those who also enjoy metal ought to check out the following:
Equilibrium - Epic and folky, very fun to listen to, purely sung in German.
Kreator, Sodom, Destruction - These are Germany's big three thrash metal bands.
Tankard - Metal ALL about beer. Lyrics are in English, but still super fun stuff.
Dark Age - Good melodic death metal.
Savage Circus - If you prefer more uplifting stuff, this is a great power metal band.
I second this suggestion. Thanks to my German teachers in high school, I got the chance to see this indie rock group live (for free!) in the U.S.
I think it was about bands singing in German. But I like Kreator, too (btw. they are from my hometown).
Thank you for this list! I have been listening to a few bands on here today. Enjoying them
I will add Ich + Ich und auch Glasperlenspiel. :)
Listening to music is a great way to learn. I recommend Clueso, Wir Sind Helden, Juli, ClickClickDecker, Johannes Oerding, Niels Frevert and Philipp Poisel.
If you accept Austrian musicians as well, then I would mention Falco. I am not a big fan of this genre, but he was a brilliant pop-disco-rock singer.
I feel so old saying this, but how can you forget The Scorpions? To this day my favorite band from the old country.
Falco is my favourite rapper but I still don't understand everything he's singing.
Agree! Nina Hagen is the soundtrack of my youth. What is also missing here is Holger Czukay and Can. They were well ahead of their time in the 70s years before drum & bass and techno came along.
Thanks for mentioning Holger Czukay! This is one of my favorites ones by him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO-KIKGezCA Alas.... we won't learn much German from this piece!
Another one we won't learn much German from but which is lovely is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfv8WeA-Vn4
True, still waiting for Latin on Doulingo. I learned it for six years in school but have since forgotten most of it. But glad to find a kindred spirit here re Holger Czukay.
Surprised no one's mentioned Revolverheld. They're pretty melodic and laid back.
THEES UHLMANN - German indie pop (my personal favorite: Am 7. März)
BROILERS - Ska/Punk Rock
LOIKAEMIE - Oi!
Hola, Mono Nikitaman is a German singing Reggae and Dancehall Band. One of my favorites.
OK, went through all the 30 comments here, and didn't find Beginner (formerly Absolute Beginner), Thomas D, and from Austria, Sportfreund Stiller, and Christina Sturmer who was in at least one document to be translated here. Beginner's fun rap shows some lite efforts to make social commentary with Faule, Thomas D had a fun pop breakthrough with Ruckenwind, and some heavier attempts with a great eco song Gebet an dem Planet, and Sturmer had a great poetic song, which in fact is an anti-war song, that had me, a guy, teary and sobbing with an Arab content refrain Mama, Ich Liebe Dich. Thanks Wooster and company, I'm looking forward to some fun, especially with Ton Steine Scherben.
I also recommend Seeed (as well as Peter Fox solo), Samy Deluxe (rap/hiphop), Max Herre (does like a mix of some hip hop/R&B/alternative pop stuff), Matteo Capreoli (indie), Xavier Naidoo (he is pretty religious with his text, but his voice is amazing-does soul, pop, hiphop), Kool Savas is a pretty good rapper and he and Xavier have an album together XAVAS, Blumio (rap/hiphop), and Cro.
This is a great list! I'd recommend the folk metal band Varg, and the folk metal band Equilibrium.
I'm not sure if by German you mean bands from Germany only or merely bands that have songs in German language so... I'll post this anyway.
I like some songs from Austrian band "L'Ame Immortelle". Admittedly some of their songs are in English but a most of them are in German. Here are some links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D30kYmf-rw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xd3i0NvxAQ
Not a German band/artist, of course, but my fellow students of German might be interested to know Peter Gabriel recorded German versions of two of his early albums:
Hey! Thanks everyone for so many new recommendations
Especially Nina Hegen!! Also Fettes Brot and Equilibrium
Ich bin glücklich :D
My favorite bands are: Powerwolf - something like "Church Metal" or "Gothic Metal" Diary of Dreams - slow songs like a dream. "Darkwave" style.
BTW, you can google "list of german bands" and google will show you a list of the popular band with filters by genre.
