Isnt "hound" a more literal translation? At the very least it should be an acceptable answer.
It may sound more alike, but "dog" is a more common English word. There isn't any real difference between "dog" and "hound" as far as Swedish is concerned, so it's not really more literal either.
I've tryed to submit the answer with hound and yes, hound and dog aren't that different as far as swedish goes.
