No hearts awarded in lessons on web browser
When I take lessons from my French course in the Duolingo app on my iPhone, I have three hearts per lesson – so if I make it through without making any mistakes, I earn a lingot. When I take the same lessons on my web browser, I don't see any hearts, and I don't earn any lingots. It looks as though the hearts only show up during tests on the web browser?
My screen looks different to yours on both Safari and Chrome. Here's Safari on V. Pres. 3.5:
And here's Chrome on the same exercise.
If I get a word wrong, the bar goes backwards a little bit, rather than me losing a heart. I only joined a couple of days ago – might be a new users thing?
Before introducing new features for everyone, Duolingo runs tests between two groups of users to see how one feature affects their performance (usually referred to as A/B testing). You are likely in a test group with a new feature. And I like the look of it, because I feel that it makes it less arbitrary how much you get to practise individual words.
Your screen looks different from the normal Duolingo lesson screen on the web version which is same as in the screenshot shared by Lenkvist. It maybe another experiment by Duolingo though I am less inclined to think so.
Edit: Is the screenshot from the actual lesson or the placement test they provide before starting any lessons?
Well in that case, it's probably some new change they are testing with few accounts.

You mentioned lessons and tests here. What did you mean by tests?
