Finished tree with 329-day streak.
The tree is finished, but I've still got work to do. At the beginning I tried to keep all the lessons gold. That became increasingly difficult, so I just went ahead and finished the tree. I'm still trying for 365 days, so you haven't gotten rid of me yet!
Gratz, It's my first day here though, Can you speak fluently after finishing it? how about your listening skills?
My goal was to improve to the point where fluency could be possible. To become fluent, I need actual conversations. I can read my sister-in-law's Facebook posts, although I often have to look up some words. I couldn't even begin to do that before. No, I'm not fluent, but I'm starting to get a feel for what "sounds" right. My listening skills have improved, but not to the same extent as my reading. Have fun with it, and don't worry about making mistakes. Repeating a lesson may be frustrating, but it's really a good learning strategy.
My advice is keep on with Duolingo every day, which is really useful, but to use other language learning sites at least as much as you use Duolingo. Duo is great at what it does, but it does not teach you to speak the other language at all, nor to recognise words in normal conversation; nor does it teach you the essential and useful grammar of the language. Which other sites you use depends on your pre-existing knowledge and your personal tastes.
Well done! That streak shows dedication! But isn't the whole idea that you learn new words every time you re-do old lessons? I noticed certain subjects don't turn from gold until you get a certain number of points, so it feels as if they intend for you to go back to them at that specific time. I imagine it'll take me at least another 10 months to a year to complete.
Yes, I noticed that too. That made it fun to redo a lesson. I want to learn new words. The streak was an accident really. I was having so much fun, I didn't realise I had a streak going. Then the streak became an excuse to take a German break.
I'm considering paying for formal tuition once I've completed the app, do you feel like you've progressed enough having finished the tree to step into that kind of tuition easily? Of course you can start courses as a complete beginner, but I feel it's best to push yourself before committing. I'm a little concerned that I'll be able to read well, and fall at the first hurdle in conversation.
It depends on your goals. If you need to speak German at work, then go for tuition or look for a German club. Socially? I have yet to met a German person who isn't gracious and helpful. Yes, they may correct you, but that's what you need. Ask to be corrected. The biggest problem is finding someone who will let the conversation be in German. Most want to practice their English.
Life is busy. I haven't read a good book in months! One strategy is to let the early lessons go without strengthening. Then when you have "one of those days", chose something easy and get on with the day. The streak is less important than enjoying the process.
Congratulations and very well done! I'm in the process of doing the same thing!
Congratulations and way to go on the streak! Hang in there for 35 more days.
Very well done. Nearly finished myself but all that it's done is improve my vocabulary and writing skills and made me realise just how far there is still to go.
That's all? Sounds impressive to me. I know what you mean though. I feel like I've just started.
congratulations! and I wish I had your dedication! I'm working to build my own streak.
CarolZaczk, if you don't mind me asking, about how many points per day do you think you did? I just started on duolingo 6 days ago and was wondering how long the whole tree takes. I have my goal set at 30 points per day but I generally do 50 or more.
I never even thought about points. I just concentrated on finishing a lesson every day--any lesson. If a new lesson took too long to complete, I'd go back and strengthen something less challenging. If I go too fast, I forget the new words. So if you're going for points or speed, I'm a poor role model!
