Some comment sections are locked for no apparent reason.

For example, comments for "La esponja" (The sponge) in Spanish are locked, without a single comment posted in it!

I found several other comment sections locked in Spanish, with comments in them but with no apparent reason for the lock. :/

Hi there, did you have a specific comment you wanted to make for La esponja?

The Spanish course is one of Duolingo's most seasoned courses. Generally, those sentence discussions are only locked when we see people posting clutter such as casual comments that aren't helpful to people learning the language, repeating questions that others have already asked, spam, profanity, and things like that. Some discussions collect over 800 comments and after we clean them less than 50 were useful. Some discussions have collected nothing useful but take a lot of time to keep cleaning. So, usually, the reasons aren't apparent because we've cleaned them up. But, there usually is a reason that was apparent to a moderator or staff member.

Thanks for your concern!

No, after I was done I googled it. It's annoying not being able to ask during a session, but I see the spam issue and I guess it isn't a big deal.

I agree. I'd rather comments are downvoted or reported if necessary than see the discussion locked for everyone.

Sometimes the Discussion button does not work, and you cannot even see the discussion. I don't mind if it is locked, but not to see the discussion at all?

Hrm, I'm not sure what that's about. :(

I was in Dutch this time and I reported each discussion page, but I wondered if this happens when they are updating pages.

They could be discussions that have had to be cleared of spam regularly, especially if they're early on in the tree.

It's kind of annoying when you're confused about something though. :/

You can always post your questions in the forum.

yes. sometimes there are comments with around 5 or 6 comments that are locked, but the comments are related to the phrase, and arent clutter. It makes it really hard to get clarity for things i am unsure of because I can't ask questions
