I tend to use 'flera' and 'mera', whereas the course seems to use 'fler' and 'mer'. Are the shorter forms more common nowadays?

They're quite common in spoken or informal Swedish, but official publications and newspapers use fler and mer.

Det du sa(de) var överraskande - Jag sku(lle) ha gissat, att längre ord är mer(a) officiella :)

i tried to translate with "several cars" but that was wrong. so there is obviously a difference between mer/fler and flera/fler ?!

Man kan se "sku" i finlandssvenskan, speciellt i friare former, t.ex. Facebook, dikter...

I think "fler" is restricted to things that are countable, like cars. "mer" is for amounts, like "Jag behöver mer öl."
