Create A New Idiom for Duolingo!

I know, I'm supposed to be in bed. But, I made the mistake of discovering the Twitter tag #CreateANewIdiom and had to toss a few in for Duolingo.

An idiom is a way of saying something that is not always obvious to non-native speakers. An example would be saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" in order to tell people to not judge something by how it looks at first glance.

The #CreateANewIdiom tag appears to be all about using existing Idioms to create new ones that hold the same meaning. (Please note, an idiom is not the same as an axiom. Here is a link with just a few of many Idioms to get you started.

I hope you will enjoy mine and contribute your own, Duolingo-themed idioms to the Twitter sphere. :D

CreateANewIdiom
CreateANewIdiom nine trees CreateANewIdiom AB test CreateANewIdiom 2 trees 1 ladder
My favorite of course is the AB test.

If you tweet an Idiom under these tags, I hope you'll share a screenshot with us. :D

Oh, good one! It took me a minute, but it was for "A penny for your thoughts" right? You could also try "A lingot for your thoughts" Anyhow, you should tweet your idiom! Would love to see it show up in the twitter tags :D

Han är inte värd en rutten lingot (He is not worth a rotten lingot), from the Swedish saying "han är inte värd ett ruttet lingon" ~ he is worthless (he's not worth a rotten lingonberry).

Or:

Oh wow! I just realized this tag was probably created in response to China banning wordplay in the press. Article about that here

Stay golden.

November 29, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Usagiboy7

We seriously need to get these on Twitter people. If a bunch duo enthusiasts took over the #CreateANewIdionms and #Duolingo tags it would probably make the news somewhere!

Check your idioms though. An idiom is not the same as just a common saying. If you google Idiom you'll get definitions and examples. ;)

For each bat in your neighbor's attic there are three in your own.

It means that for every "error" in another language, there are many more annoying quirks in your native tongue. Celebrate linguistic personality!

I don't have a Twitter account, so feel free to share:

  • Even the natives began with the basics.

  • Climb trees without the fear of heights.

  • Strive for the 25.

  • (... Sure, why not:) Praise the Owl!

Here is one I just used in real time: "you can scale that tree when it arrives." (For, you can cross that bridge when it comes.)

I just wanted to say, that something that I love about duolingo is not only the fact, that I can learn more and more, but also a very dedicated community having already its inside jokes and feeling a bit like a family (of profession). Basically: <3 PS : the tree is the apple of my eye.

Not all lessons are created equal, but they still award the same XP. Not all skills are created equal, but they still award the same lingots.

Language is Golden. :)

You can tweet that if you consider it worthy. I don't have Twitter to do it myself.

It isn't really an idiom, but too good to waste.
