The Duolingo quote I have looked up today is this:

"She replaces the baby with a black dog."

"Sie ersetzt das Baby durch einen schwarzen Hund.."

In what context could this possibly make sense?!?!

Lily does not like her new baby sister. She has always wanted a dog, never another human! Her parents didn't listen and brought this little thing home from the hospital, so she goes out to find a suitable pet, and to convince her parents they were wrong. She searches high and low until she spots a black dog in an alley. He looks like the perfect dog for her. His Royal Highness William Avalanche Tricky of Giggles, she decides to name him.

When she gets home, her parents want her to be in the first family of four photo. But, Lily doesn't want her sister in the picture at all. While her sister sleeps peacefully in the prop basket, their parents fiddling once again with that darn camera, she replaces the baby with a black dog.

You decide what happens next. ;) A bit of a stretch, I admit. Kids don't usually choose that kind of a name for a dog....

P.S. - "His Royal Highness William Avalanche Tricky of Giggles"? I don't know if that is one of your random name generators at work, or if those were the first words that came into your head while writing this piece.

Tricky McGiggles was too stereotypical of a name for a dog, so I had to dig deep. Indeed! That name is completely my own creation.

No, actually, it's kids that do give such strange names.

It was like they were permanently switched. No sooner would she put the baby down for a nap, pet the pooch, and step out for a quick minute of fresh air, she'd come back in just find the dog in the baby bed and the baby in the dog bed. After retrieving the puppy from the baby bed, very carefully so as not to wake either of them, she replaces the baby with a black dog.

Do not underestimate children. A true story from Victorian England tells of a 15 year old girl from a well off family took her 18 month old half brother from his crib, slit his throat from ear to ear and dumped his body down an outside latrine.

She almost got away with it but several years after the murder she confessed. It was thought that she was protecting her younger brother who was believed to have been implicated but her confession squashed that idea. She never revealed if she had an accomplice and lived well into her 90's.

Grammatically, it makes complete and perfect sense. Or this(?) :

There's this family standing in a pet shop asking for a black dog. The shopkeeper's baby comes crawling out from somewhere. AH! The shopkeeper finally found a cute little black dog. So she replaces the baby with a black dog.

"She replaces the baby with a black dog." - Maybe she had a miscarriage and got a dog for comfort until she is ready to try again. Dogs help with the healing.

Alison Elaine Frost decided to do something hilariously funny for April Fools' Day. She asked her bestie Jossiienne if she could borrow her newborn black dog. While Jaesyn Frost was busy getting the milk, she replaced her little cousin with the black dog. :D ;)

I see what you did there - you turned it into an April Fools' joke! Nice job. You did change the sentence a bit though. Alexis kept it true to form, however by introducing the dog previously in your stories I feel like both of you should put 'the' black dog, whereas 'a' black dog implies some random dog not previously written about. Perhaps I could be wrong, but that is just the impression I get with this sentence, which is quite possibly the main reason why I find it so amusing. It's like "Hey! Lookie here! I'm just going to pull a black dog out of nowhere and switch it with this baby!"

I put 'the' black dog :P Because I'm referring to a specific dog. :P

As was Alexis, although she tried to sneak 'a' black dog in there by not mentioning Sir Tricky of Giggles for a whole paragraph. But we know, Alexis. We know. ;)

Jossiienne has a best friend? I thought she was written in a tragic story and a tragic fate. Of course, you can be friends with a werewolf like how James, Sirius and Peter, did. (From Harry Potter) But unfortunately Jossiienne's entire life was just secrets and tragedies. The poor girl, I never remembered her ever having any friend at all. And... A black dog? Isn't that a bit too extreme?

Edit: Cut my self off too short. For some reason the thought of a werewolf and a black dog makes me think of Sirius and Lupin.

It is more exciting than "the pen of my aunt", but I guess it in the same sort of area. The idea is to illustrate some point of grammar rather than present what might be a useful phrase in conversation.

Today I came across "Você acha que eu sou seu brinquedo?" in Portuguese, which can be translated as "Do you think that I am your toy?" My favorites are also "Eu bebo quando eu quero" (I drink when I want - as useful as the previous phrase) and "O verão é para a juventude" (The summer is for the youth - FML)

A girl, running away from an animal perpatrator, was carrying her black dog in her arms. Worrying for her dog's safety, she finds a baby in a basket, apparently abandoned by their mother. Hoping to keep her dog (and possibly the baby) safe, she replaced the baby inside with the black dog. She then wrapped the dog quickly with the blanket in the basket, carried it to the door of a random stranger, and ran away with the baby, who would later be adopted by her a few days later.
