There isn't a direct translation that sounds natural and can't be interpreted two ways.
But you could say "Ik hoefde geen broek te dragen"
In days gone by,(as late as the 70's) women were not allowed to wear pants, only dresses!
This definitely sounds weirder in relation to UK English than American!
