I'd like to know why 'midday" is not acceptable. (Personally, I think it sounds a bit more melodramatic than "noon", since we apparently get to imagine our own context.)

It's definitely acceptable, someone hasn't thought to put midday in the synonyms box with noon, report it. :)

Gary Cooper in "High Noon" is my guess. Especially if the next sentence is "Do not forsake me O my darling".
