When to use "de" and "du"?

If it means the same, which one should I use in any sentence? Thanks.

De you use after an amount or a negative it means "of" such as "Beaucoup de...." Du means some. For example du riz. because normally you don't eat one grain of rice (un riz). I hope this helps!
