Getting to the bottom of Streaks and the Streak Freeze

I have been looking through the forums and have come across many posts about the Streak Freeze. Many people say it is a great way to save a streak if you miss a day, and others say it is used automatically.

If I purchase a Streak Freeze, it will save a streak for 24 hours.

When does the timer start? Does it automatically start when I purchase it? Does it wait until I have missed a streak and give me a 24 hour grace period to maintain my current streak? If I do not miss a streak that day, or any subsequent day, would my Streak Freeze stay with me until I miss a day?

On the topic of Streaks:

At what time does Duolingo mark the day (24 hour period)? i.e. Currently my streaks reset around a 6pm local Korean time, or 4am EST.

If I travel to a different time zone, will it change the time for a day (24 hour period)? i.e. Currently living in Korea, but traveling to Hawaii for 2 week X-mas holiday.

Any clarity or help would be greatly appreciated! Probably going to buy a streak freeze anyway, just didn't want to waste it if I am able to meet my goals for the day.

The time for the streak is based on the location at which you originally created your account and doesn't change when you are elsewhere. Once you buy the Streak Freeze it waits until you need it and is just one day's worth. So if you see it is used, buy another. Thanks for your help! It did explain things a bit more clearly. My time zone must have been west coast when I first started using duolingo, probably when I was on a friend's VPN.

This was probably the most helpful part of the link, "It resets to zero when a day is missed unless a streak freeze is bought in advance.[2]" but after checking the wiki links, all are user comment backed information. It would be clearer if they could state it under the Streak Freeze description in the Shop.

I saw you were already linked to the wiki site, but I like to answer people questions directly (in case you still had any confusion):

The streak freeze only activates once you go 24 hours without earning points. It is pro-active, and must be bought in advance. You can buy it at anytime before you miss a day. It last until you do not have any activity for 334 hours. (I recently used my streak freeze that I had bought over a year ago!).

Your 'day' is based on the timezone you were in when you first made your account. It cannot be changed. Once it is set, it is set for life [1].

[1] Some users have reported that their 'day' has changed when they changed timezones, but duolingo staff has repeatedly said that this cannot happen. I have no reason to believe that these users are lying, so there may be a glitch in affect somewhere. The good news is, with the new coach mode, your countdown timer will tell you how long you have left before your day ends. When you change timezones, just keep an eye on that counter to make sure nothing funny happens :)

Did you mean 334 hours or 334 days? 334 hours = approx 14 days... (13.9167)

So that would make a dormant streak freeze last for 14 days without being used. If you meant days it would last 334 days without being used.

I understand that the STREAK FREEZE itself only works for one day, my comments are based on dormancy length.

Thanks for you help!

I think I my fingers had a mind of their own when I was typing.
It should be "24 hours".
A dormant streak freeze last until you need it, there is no expiration date.
