It usually is, but there are a few other ways to get into a subjunctive clause.

The subjunctive is used after indefinite relatives: chiunque venga (whoever comes).

My Maiden and Rombustelli mentions: dovunque (wherever), qualsiasi (whatever), qualunque (whatever), quale che (whatever) but also says that in "informal registers" (common talk?) one often encounters the indicative.

Why is present subjunctive (vada) used here? I thought that "che" is usually needed to form a subjunctive sentence.
