What is the purpose of following someone?

Has it been beneficial to you, and how?

If you follow someone, it's someone to take inspiration from, motivation, advice, etc. Sometimes it can just be someone who can join or help you along with your language journey.

Also congrats on reaching 300!

Some friends follow me and we challenge each other.

I follow those whose work on Duo really inspires me, and those who work with me on the immersion section.

When I started duo I followed a few people just to motivate myself to keep on track, since then however many people have added me for the same reason, as I somehow am a motivator to them. My very close friend in real life is also on duo, and we help each other on our language pursuits.

when i see higher experience points from some of the people i follow, i have to get higher, push harder. so in my case it depends on how active the people are. i'm always looking for some prolific duolingista.

of course, the element of competition is something I use to motivate my students every day at school as well. I am a language teacher, and the whole piont of this is that COMMUNITY is what facilitates learning... why do you think so many people want to take a class or have a teacher for languages instead of just learning by themselves? Because learning languages can be really unmotivating. It usually takes weeks for you to get better to where you´ll notice a difference... but if you have friends and do competitions and see their points and compare yourself, you will be super motivated :D Wow that was a rant, sorry but you get it hehe

Not a rant at all, but a helpful explanation and particularly useful as it comes from someone with experience. Please have a lingot from me. :-)
