Can this not be correct ? "The book of theirs is white"

That should also be accepted!

We English speakers would understand "the book of theirs is white" But it's not good spoken English. we'd always say 'their book is white'

Hmm, I would use it on occasion:

I say, the book of theirs is white, but dash it all if they think I'm going to fall for that marketing ploy, give me a book that is black any day of the week and I'm yours for a quick pie at mrs miggins' pie shop I'll be bound.

Ah I disagree, I would use "the book of theirs is white" in certain conversations.

Ahhh...the way of structuring the sentence confused me into thinking because it was "branco" that it must be "deles".....must listen more carefully.

Is this bad Portuguese?: "O delas livro e branco"

Yes. When you use dele(s), dela(s), they always come after the noun. Anyway, here you could also translate as "o livro deles é branco"
