It's amazing, the TTS sounds like a tape played backwards
Can this refer to both a traditional razor and an electric razor?
No, the latter would be rakapparat - literally "shaving apparatus/device".
Tack så mycket!
Is "razor blade" okay?
That would be rakblad. edit: ett rakblad
Underwood ger Russo en rakhyvel
How is "ger" pronouced?
Like this: http://forvo.com/word/ger/#sv
Raka dig din smutsigt skägg!
Raka ditt smutsiga skägg! :)
If is not a razor blade nor an electric razor, what kind of razor is a 'rakhyvel'? Maybe one of those antique tools barbers used, with a foldable handle?
This is what I was referring to:
(Sorry for the huge pic, I couldn't find anything smaller with good image quality)
It looks old-fashioned and I've never seen anything like it.
Edit: Actually, it is not a "rakhyvel":). See devalanteriel's post below.
Och detta är ett rakblad:
RaddatzK: No, we use rakhyvel for that, though some say säkerhetshyvel.
If a razor blade is combined with the housing apparatus, however, it becomes a safety-razor. Is there a Swedish equivalent of "Safety-razor?"
Sorry, that's a rakkniv :)
Ok, so then we have rakkniv - shaving knife, rakhyvel - razor, rakblad - razor blade, rakapparat - electric razor
Watch out, hipsters...
The picture RAlberdi supplied is of "a cut throat razor". They were used before the safety razor was invented.
They're still used! Just not nearly as much. :)
Could "rakhyvel" refer to a box cutter razor, or is it only shaving razors?
Definitely a shaving razor. The box cutter kind is brytbladskniv - "break-blade-knife".
Why is "is giving" not also correct?
