What happens after Beta?

The course has been an amazing experience so far and has definitely helped my ability with the language, made it a lot easier to understand some elements of the grammar and been useful for picking up on words/phrases along with the general direction of conversations in Irish. Thank you so, so much to everyone who's contributed to this, you've really made thousands of people a lot happier.

But what I really want to know now is the status of Beta, and what happens after Beta?

  • Are more lessons added or current lessons expanded upon?

  • Do we get access to words/phrases we've learned? As in dictionary/thesaurus format?

  • Will we able to interact more with each other in Irish?

  • Will there be more emphasis on informal/conversational use of Irish?

  • Will the Lingot Store inventory be increased? i.e. with unlockables related to the language?

Many of the things you mentioned will become available, but we don't necessarily have to graduate from Beta for these to be launched. Here's the breakdown:

Are more lessons added or current lessons expanded upon?

Yes! This functionality is available to us when we want it, not just after Beta. We are going to do our best to get some of the current issues out of the way before expanding the tree in this way.

Do we get access to words/phrases we've learned? As in dictionary/thesaurus format?

Yes! This should become available soon in the form of the "Words" tab that you have in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian.

Will we able to interact more with each other in Irish?

Hmm...Duolingo doesn't really have any functionality for this kind of thing (at least not yet, anyway), but we'll do our best to point you in the direction of sites where you can do this.

Will there be more emphasis on informal/conversational use of Irish?

See my answer for the next question :)

Will the Lingot Store inventory be increased? i.e. with unlockables related to the language?

Yes! Once we are able to add Bonus skills (hopefully soon), we will add several new skills that you can purchase with your hard earned lingots. Some of the ideas we've had include: conversational/colloquial Irish, proverbs, a skill teaching the names of all the provinces, counties and major towns/cities, among others.

The major difference to now would be the addition of Immersion, with most of the articles likely to be drawn from Vicipéid. Similarly, there would be flirting and idiom modules in the Lingot Store, along with timed practice and the other bonus features of regular languages.

Honestly the Beta tag says more about the quality of the course than the amount of content. Coming out of Beta there won't be very much new content, it's more just a statement that the course is adequately polished.

That said, I believe Duolingo has fairly recently added tools to allow teams to add to their courses, as well as Duolingo generally trying to add new features to the site, so we'll probably see more things added to the course as time goes on. Most of them just won't be directly related to the Beta tag.
