Is there a way to get rid of unwanted followers?

Hi- right now there isn't, but it's something that we're working on adding.

Thanks for the reply! If you could get that implanted ASAP I would be very grateful. But my suggestion for it is to not have followers and just have friends. And if anybody wants to be your friend you have to accept or decline the invitation.

If someone follows you, it should be an honor. The person most likely wants to learn from you. The DL users can always look at your stream anyway.

      Agreed.

Also, DL doesn't have personal information like Facebook does. Generally speaking, I am quite hesitant about social media sites, but DL is different for me because it is about learning a subject and sharing that experience.

And, yes, I follow someone because I think I can learn from that person. I think that if we get into the whole "friending" thing like FB, it becomes more like high school -- something I'd rather avoid.

I joined Duolingo to learn by myself, not to make friends. People shouldn't feel the need to monitor my stream and see what I'm learning. That's quite absurd if you ask me. And how does somebody learn by following you?

Well, the word used by DL is "friend"; I see that as a misnomer. I don't think of the folks I follow as "friends."

How do I learn from the folks that I follow? In my stream, I can see which discussions they participate in and I can read their questions and responses. The people I follow have things to say that I find very helpful; that is why I follow them. I don't "know" them; I find their contributions valuable and I appreciate their efforts to share their knowledge.

Given your feelings about this topic, I vote for an option in one's profile to make one's stream public or not and whether or not one wants to participate in the comments (which are a group experience). I would NOT like the whole friend/unfriend/poke/approve/disapprove dynamic of FB.

As I said, none of this is personal information; it's not about "liking" or "knowing" a person. But, if one does not want to participate in the group/shared experience, one should have the option to turn it off.

You are probably the only person here who is annoyed with that.

Nope. Some random person followed me. Don't want them.
