Since 'sin' is referring to the elephant (subject) that would mean that "The elefant is its (own) friend" and also sound about as awkward as in English. If you added 'egen' (own) it would work but of course have nothing to do with the original sentence here "Elefanten är sin egen vän" (The elephant is its own friend) :D

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that the German title “Der Hundertjährige, der aus dem Fenster stieg und verschwand” was not even the cheeky suggestion of the publisher's editor-in-chief but the literal translation of the Swedish original. :'D
