Hals is a more classy/elegant term for neck. Women and swans have halsen. Plump animals like men and giraffes have nekken. Pigs would have a nek too if they had any distinguished feature that separated their heads from their bodies and, a little bit contradictory to the classiness, the S-shaped tube of a toilet is called a "zwanenhals"
