After making a comment about Khmer on Strapsoption's Duo goes series, I was encouraged to make one for Khmer. So here it is, Google was my best friend for this I have to admit.

Map of Cambodia with the provinces

Firstly, Duo decided to visit: Angkor Wat(អង្គរវត្ត) Angkor Wat Is the largest religious monument in the world! The temple was order to be built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. It was built as a Hindu temple but later in the 13th century became Buddhist. It's an important structure in Cambodia, so much so that it is actually depicted on the flag!

After discovering Angkor, Duo decided to learn more about Cambodian history. Duo learnt about the Khmer Rouge which revealed a dark past.

He visited Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum(សារមន្ទីរឧក្រិដ្ឋកម្មប្រល័យពូជសាសន៍ទួលស្លែង) This building started out as a high school, then when the Khmer rouge took over the country in 1975, it became the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21). Anyone though to have done something against the regime or even thought about being against it were brought in, Out of an estimated 17,000 people imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, there were only twelve known survivors. Up to 2 million Cambodians, nearly a quarter of the country's population then (Around 8 million) were massacred, during the "killing field" era between 1975-1979. Duo then decided to visit: Choeung Ek(ជើងឯក) Today, Choeung Ek is a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa. The stupa has acrylic glass sides and is filled with more than 5,000 human skulls. This during the Khmer Rouge regime was the killing fields between 1975 and 1979 .

After learning about the fairly recent and very sad history of Cambodia, Duo wanted to see more of the beautiful parts of the history like Angkor Wat.

Duo visited The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, In Khmer it's full name is Preah Barum Reachea Veang Chaktomuk Serei Mongkol ( ព្រះបរមរាជវាំងចតុមុខសិរីមង្គល). and slept there for the night. The Kings of Cambodia have occupied it since it was built in 1860s, with a period of absence when the country came into turmoil during and after the reign of the Khmer Rouge. In the morning, Duo visited the Silver Pagoda. The temple's official name is Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morakot ( ព្រះវិហារព្រះកែវមក៌ត), "Temple of the Emerald Buddha". It houses many national treasures including gold and jeweled Buddha statues. A small 17th century baccarat crystal Buddha (the "Emerald Buddha" of Cambodia) and a life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds and weighs 90kg!

Lastly, Duo visited the Independence Monument/Vimean Akareach(វិមានឯករាជ្យ,) It was built in 1958 for Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. It stands on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city.

Duo got back and decided to make a course for Khmer, he wanted to help the people and share the beautiful language!

So is this still being worked on? Because personally, I think this would be extremely useful for a lot of people in this generation. My family speaks this language and because this language is really hard to learn, not a lot of my family members in my generation can speak it. This would be a great step for me to learn my culture.

I made this as a plea for Khmer, I also think it would be extremely useful there isn't much out there for the language and it would massively help both Khmer speakers and anyone wanting to learn it!
