A hint for UK learners of Portuguese with Sky or Freesat
If you live in the UK and have a Sky or Freesat box then you can bring a whole new dimension to your language learning: Brazilian TV - including a daily fix of some popular novelas.
Hidden away in the Sky electronic programme guide (EPG) on channel 801 is the free-to-air (FTA) station Record TV (http://www.recordeuropa.com/). It has a selection of programmes from the parent network in Brazil and one or two programmes in European Portuguese. Try it now!
Because Record TV is FTA it can also be received on the Freesat platform. Unfortunately it is not part of the Freesat EPG and so you need to tune it in manually. This procedure is slightly technical but the general idea is given here: http://www.uksatellitehelp.co.uk/2011/02/11/non-freesat-channels/ If you need to know the transponder parameters you can find them by searching for Record on this page: http://www.lyngsat.com/tvchannels/br/Record-Europa.html
It's so much more satisfying watching television programmes from Brazil on your main TV than watching low definition streaming video on your laptop or tablet.
If you are more interested in European Portuguese, then Euronews (Sky 508, Freesat 204) has audio commentary in that variant of the language (you'll have to fiddle with the audio channel settings to select Portuguese rather than English though).
