J'ai reussi!

Today I can proudly say that I finished my French tree on Duolingo! What a journey it was. Every morning in the train, doing my assignments. It has been great! I always wanted to learn French! Thank you Duolingo!

That is something to be really proud of, and I think you should also be proud of that 310 day streak that got you there. :)

Haha yes! I am happy that I found Duolingo, but I do feel that the course could use more French exercises. According to Duolingo I can now read 71% of all French text and I would like to make that number go up.

Bonjour IndyS, I just want to tell you, « Merci » pour sharing this website. C'est très amusant et helpful !

That site is good but is there a way of jumping levels or can you only start from the beginning so that it knows what words you know?

https://www.duolingo.com/curlyeric

If you really know the words you just progress very quickly. Like all good learning systems it adapts and quickly hides things that you know. It's also great to reinforce spelling since it doesn't give you any leeway. I've been at it for 17 days and already have over 2800 3000 words in my stack.

2800? That's quite a lot more than my 1900 words on Duolingo!

May I suggest, free podcasts in French from the Migros Podclub's Marie:

http://podclub.ch/fr/emissions/l-avis-de-marie-f

I listen and try to talk with her every day now. It helps me with liasons and finding new words. When I say talk, I'm actually repeating her words, not talking directly with her.

On that note, I wouldn't trust the 71% figure at all. By coincidence I'm on 71% too, and I'm only 2/3rds of the way up my tree. DL is a brilliant program, and a brilliant start to really gaining an understanding of a language, but we all need to 'get out there' and start using it for real. That'll get your number up from 71%, as will lots of repetition, which is why my score is as high as yours; but I would imagine you are quite some way ahead of me, with your language (French)

December 28, 2014

I sort of had that suspicion. But if 100% is gained with Immersion then how do we strengthen the remaining 29% then?

December 28, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/maddyis7

Just doing 'Strengthens' in each skill, you reinforce the language, supposedly (and I'm sure this is true) getting it into long-term memory. In short just keep re-doing 'finished skills' especially where they have de-golded and your score (%) will creep up at about 0.1% per time. I hope that helps explain it a bit :)

I have done a lot of strengthening, but I have never seen that message appear afterwards. Doesn't take away that the strength system is very useful! :)

December 29, 2014

I haven't used any other program before. I have done some Google searches for learning French but I had no succes. I discovered Duolingo via an Apple blog and since then I have done Duolingo on every train trip to school.

Toutes mes félicitations ! Bon boulot ! Bravo !

December 29, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/evenwerk

Merci beaucoup!

Bonne courage !

Congratulations!! So.. I'm wondering can you speak french fluently now?

December 31, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/evenwerk

Thank you! Unfortunately the Duolingo course doesn't teach you to be a fluent French speaker but in simple conversations you should be fine. The grammar basis has been set here, and if you don't know words in a conversation, a quick Google Translate should help you further.
