Dia daoibh!

This has been another quiet week on the Incubator since the Duo team and most contributors are taking a well deserved break. Since this is our last update for 2014, I am going to share some extra statistics with you to look back over the year, as well as looking forward to what's to come in the next year. So, first of all, the year that was 2014:

Past

  • The course was added to the Incubator on St. Patrick's Day, but the first contributors were added in mid-April, and we hit the ground running! This is a graph showing our sentences per week from the very beginning.

Present

  • Here's a quick look at our current report numbers:

Future

2015 is going to be a great year for Duolingo, and an amazing year for the Irish course. Here are some of the things you can look forward to:

  • Bonus skills: We are currently awaiting the ability to add bonus skills, but once we can, you will be able to buy some really fun and useful skills with your lingots (Maybe a skill for each dialect? Maybe a skill about Irish history? Irish mythology anyone?)

  • Bigger and better tree: After a great talk with Luis, we have decided to begin planning for our "Tree 2.0" (which will get under way once we have more metrics to ensure you learn in the best way possible). We hope to add several hundred more words, more grammar skills (we are going to hammer that grammar), and we are going to improve upon the existing tree (plus, we will finally fix that pesky typo in Plurals. That's right, "lachan", I'm looking at you)

  • Furthering our foray in the forums: We plan on further increasing communication in the Irish forums, and we hope we can be there when you need us with your...interesting...questions.

  • More of you, more of us: We hope our course continues to grow in numbers like it currently is, and we hope to invite some new contributors as the reach of our course increases.

  • Bye bye Beta: We have every intention to break free from the shackles of the beta phase sometime during the next year. To do this we need to work hard on getting those report numbers down as much as possible.

  • The Voice: We can all look forward to hearing the new voice of the Irish course...more updates on this once everyone is back in action :)

  • Finally, (and most importantly) we hope you guys continue enjoying our course as much as we enjoy making it. Here's to a great 2015 :)

End of year statistics

  • No. of users: 221k
  • Reports per 100 users: 3.51
  • Total no. of sentences: 16,920
  • Current contributor count: 5
  • Total no. of hours spent on the Incubator: More than we could ever hope to count
  • Amount of fun had: ∞
  • Current no. of words: 1711 (let's aim for ~2000 or ~2100 by tree 2.0)
  • Current no. of skills: 64 (let's aim for (at least) 70 by tree 2.0)

Slán!

Athbhliain faoi mhaise!

Happy New Year!

Má tá sibh ag glacadh vótáil ar scileanna bónas bheadh grá dom ceann ar canúintí a fheiceáil. Go raibh míle maith agat as do obair crua ar an gcúrsa seo i mbliana, Alex. Bhain mé an-taitneamh as é!

If you're taking votes for bonus skills I would love to see one on dialects! Thank you for all your hard work on this course this year, Alex. I really enjoyed it!

I have to agree, dialects. Though I do like trying to confuse the program with "Madadh" and "Cad é mar tá tú?" and the like. Most of the time it allows me to go away from CO so bravo for that team!

Go hiontach. Tá's a'm go mbreithníonn mé an cúrsa go grinn, ach den chuid is mó (seachas an guth agus cupla rud Béarlachas - ach tá sibh á n-aistrú!), tá sé an-mhaith. Ceapaim go bhfuil sé ar an rud is fearr le fáil saor in aisce, gan piratáil. Má dteastíonn cahbair uait, inis dhom. B'aoibheann liom cahbrú libh.

Ádh mór agus go n-éiri libh.

Are there any non-free that are better than Duolingo?

Immersion programs in the Gaeltacht. And, personally, I prefer classes and tutors to keep me motivated/on track.

Ah. Does "piratáil" not mean "pirating/to pirate"? I figured you were talking about software.

I was talking about books, actually. But I believe that Teach Yourself and the others can be effective, if used in conjunction with other things. Same as Duolingo. You need other resources as well.
