I'll try my best: In an L, you use the tip of the tongue and the air is guided through the sides. For an R, you have to use the blade of the tongue (which is the flat top front surface just behind the tip of the tongue) and the air must go to the middle. The trick is to tense the blade of the tongue, but relax the tip so that it vibrates.

*note: I had to "rrrrrr" a lot of Rs to test this and my family is looking at me like I'm some sort of weirdo xD

Thank you SJBlood. I appreciate your time. I guess I just have to practice.

Try putting your tongue to the top of your mouth for an L sound. Then try moving it back while blowing air out. The L should turn into a harder L and then into a rolled R. It is important that you keep the tongue touching the top of the mouth. You may already be able to do it; if you say "butter" quickly, you often end up rolling your Rs. Hope this helps :)

I can roll Rs naturally, but I tried this and it didn't work. Also, the butter thing is for Americans ...

I can also, but this is how i taught two of my friends to do it and it worked for them. And yeah, the butter thing may only be for Americans. I speak English with a Chicago/Midwest American accent.

The rolled "r" sound (erre) happens either when a word begins with the letter R or when you see two r's together in a word. The word martes does not have the erre sound and it would be wrong to roll the R in that case.

It sounded like it when I listen to the word. But you must be knowing what you're saying, and I won't worry too much. Thank for taking time to reply

I don't want to make this sound like a short cut but, you can deactivate the microphone. I did because I don't have one.

Just keep trying. It took me three years, but eventually I got there. I think it's one of those things that just happens eventually.

Try having a drink of water first before practising. I can't do it at all if my mouth is too dry.
