Reflections on 400 days of Duolingo
Zuerst wünsche ich euch allen einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!
When I finished my first 365 Days, I had just reached Level 23 using only the learning tree. At that point I knew that I had learned all that the tree could teach me because I had practically learned all of the exercises by heart. At that point, I decided to give Immersion Translation a try ... and it opened up a whole new world of learning! I discovered that I simply love translating! But even more, what made it fun was finding friends here who helped the progression at every step of the way! The numbers tell the story:
365 Days : Level 23, 22500 XP, Translation Tier 0 (no translations) 400 Days : Level 25, 65500 XP, Translation Tier 13
I look forward to another year of learning in 2015. Thanks Duolingo!
Hi! Congratulations on your dedication and commitment! What would you say your weak points were right after you finished your German tree? Were you comfortable communicating with native speakers?
At about Level 20 or 22, I felt comfortable expressing myself and conversing with native speakers. That's when I threw away the translators. DL taught me a lot, but as I explained in "365 and Counting", I have spent a couple hours a day conversing with friends in Germany. That provided me with both motivation and valuable practice that DL couldn't provide.
Whoo!! Good for you! Could you give some general tips to a beginner?
I, too, am first finishing up my German tree before attempting translations, but I will soon start doing Spanish --> English, since I'm fluent in both.
Congratulations on 400 days and happy new year's! :)
Congratulations on your achievements so far! Here's a tip for anyone who is first starting immersion translations: Find a friend (or a "team") on DL to learn with. I think a limitation of IT, is that translations are rarely voted up on their own merit. It's very frustrating to be stuck at Tier 1 after translating hundreds of sentences. With cooperative learning, you can proofread for each other.
Congrats! I hit my 160th today. Hopefully I can go as far as one year (that's the main goal). Anyhow. Happy New Year and of course - have fun while learning!
I'm coming up on day 365 and was thinking of wandering off since the trees are getting a little too well known (although I just started the German from Spanish tree which would be a challenge). Maybe I'll look into the immersion.
Thanks for the inspiration - your numbers are awesome (1600 points a day for 40 days!)
Yes, it's no secret that I've found immersion translation a very rewarding experience, not the least of which is being able to help others advance. You are welcome to join our "GESTALT" team. Just post a message to my activity stream, and I'll give you additional details.
Sorry my congratulations are a bit late. You have been an immense help to me in German immersion, and I have really enjoyed being a part of the group :) 400 days is a great achievement, as is level 13 in a month!
Dear knittin, I said it at day 365, and it's even more true today: Your achievements have been an inspiration to me. Thanks for being part of our group! :)
I just did a search for 'Gestalt' to see if there was a team HQ-type discussion like the one knittingirl sent me for French and this came up. Reading about your journey and your continuing success just put a big smile on my face. Thanks for having me on the team. You, knittingirl and lc60074 and genuinely the most positive social aspects I've found in my time here. You guys are the best!
Dear daisy, reading your reply just put a big smile on my face also! Thank you for your inspiration and for being a part of our team. I really like to read your translations and to see your achievement.
Thank you so much Daisy! You definitely are one of my closest DL friends (along with DrWho, LC, and a few others). Thank you for being such a great part of the team!
Zuerst, ebenfalls einen guten Rutsch (obwohl weltweit wohl bereits 2015 sein sollte).
That's great! Happy 400! I finished my tree in the 200s, tier 1 — there's no 0 :). Never cared much for immersion including the tiers. It's a long ride but I try to get level 25 without immersion.
Congrats Whovian! 403 days wow, hope I make it that far!! I would love to join Gestalt, (hope it has no relations to gestalt therapy, bad joke) ha... Can you tell me more about how the team and how you guys work together on this? I started doing translations a few weeks back and I'm still on Tier 1
Ha! No "GESTALT" is an acronym that I coined, "GErman Support of Translators At Large Team". I'll post information to your activity stream.
