I always wonder (pronunciation wise) if I should say the d as "jee" or not... does it depend on the syllable next to it? Thank you!

If the syllable is accented, it is always 'd' and not 'j'. If the e is an open e, it is always 'd'. It changes to 'j' only with a closed 'e' or 'i' in unaccented syllables.

I thought devagar was only used for "speaking slowly".

Ele fala devagar. Ele caminha lentamente.

"devagar" and "rĂ¡pido" are also used as adverbs.
