Words endings

Hello everyone, I have just started learning and I was a bit confused with the endings of each word. For example, plates (plural) in Danish is tallerkner, but horses (plural) in Danish is heste. Is there a pattern to these endings or a reason for the different ones? Or is it just random and you have to memorize it? Thank you for the help!

I spent a year in Denmark, so my word isn't 100% but for the most part you can pluralize a word by adding "er". I think like most languages there are a lot of exceptions for specific words. Bil=Car Biler=Cars
