bonus skill spots and immersion question

I have already purchased 2 bonus skills and am wondering about the three spots. It says I have 1 skill slot left so once Christmas opened up I didn't purchase it simply because I was worried about filling all my spots.

What happens when you have your three slots, you can't purchase any more after that or do more skill slots open farther into the skill tree somewhere?

Also, how far along should you be before you try immersion? I am thinking that translating documents might be the key to heightening my skills, but am not sure at what level in the tree someone is strong enough to attempt the immersion activities.

There are only three skills available to fill the three slots, so just go ahead and buy the Christmas skill if it's still available. If more skills are added later on, I see no reason for Duo not to give us additional slots for them as well.

I started Immersion on level 8, but others again wait until they've finished their tree. The important thing is to start with headlines and short sentences that correspond to your current skill level, and then you can gradually move on to longer and more complex sentences as you learn more. Oh, and don't feel bad if you get corrected, the corrections can help you learn even more. :)

In terms of starting immersion, I think you can start whenever you feel ready. You can choose the difficulty of the sentences you translate, and as you get more comfortable with it, you can move on to more complex sentences. Have fun with your studies!

Here is an unofficial navigation guide to immersion with links to other info if you still have questions:

As of right now, I believe that there are only three bonus skills. I'd advise not buying them until you're pretty far into your tree as the bonus skills uses tenses/moods from the entire tree; so you may have to guess quite a bit for the stuff you haven't covered yet. (On the other hands, the Idioms skill is pretty much guessing anyway.)

You can start doing immersion as soon as DuoLingo lets you, but you won't be able to do much...but that's okay. Just looking at the documents for simple sentences will help you get a feel for how the language is used by native writers. As you go along, you'll slowly be able to translate and verify more complex sentences.

I suggest you buy the Christmas bonus skill now, or else you'll have to wait until next year.
