Help me with this Mafalda comic strip.

Another way I use to learn Spanish is reading Mafalda. Because of the limitations I still have with the language, I use google translate a great deal. Today, I'm having trouble with the last bit of the comic.

So far, I have the (loosely) translation as.... (1) Is the hunger & the poverty in the world gone? (2) Are the nuclear weapons removed? (3) Mafalda: Yes? Dad: This... Well, I think not daughter. (4)(This is the part I have trouble with) "Y entonce para que cuernos cambiamos de ano?" "And then to change horns of the year?"

.......What???? I look up cuernos and it's horns. I look in a book and it still says horns. Allow me to repeat this to you..............what???? What is Mafalda talking about with changing horns of the year?

I had to look that up, too.

Apparently, cuernos can also be used as a mild euphemism, as in "my foot" or sometimes as strong as vaya al cuerno for "go to hell".

So I'd say that last bit is like "Then why the dickens did we change the year?"

I'm guessing she was thinking that those were all resolutions for last year, and they're not yet accomplished, so why the heck are we moving on when we still have work to be done.

This is a great way to learn new vocabulary or modismos (sayings). When you see something new one place, and have to research it, and then have it reinforced somehow, like in a news article or a cartoon strip or a discussion board or a book - that's when (for me) something really sticks.

I'm working on it. At a glance I don't think cuernos means horns. I'm looking at "nos" at the end of the word as "us", but "cuer" isn't a word as far as I can tell. I'll get back to you unless somebody else steps up to solve the mystery.

Lrtward nailed it - "Why the hell did we change the year?" I caught 3 of my friends who are native speakers on Facebook chat and they all said the same thing.

Yo realmente amo a Mafalda. Mi inglés no es muy bueno, así que no puedo ayudarte. pero Mafalda es genial.

Cuernos es un eufemismo. Prefiero no poner las posibles palabras originales.
