New language?

Hi! I applied for the Duolingo Incubator to teach Maltese to English speakers and it would be so cool if it actually gets chosen! I really want to teach it because if you know the Maltese language, you'll be able to learn other popular languages such as Arabic, Italian, Spanish, French and others. Maltese is really close to Arabic so if you want to learn Arabic, this will make the job much easier. It's also quite similar to Italian too so it can help as well. Maltese is the ONLY Semitic language that is written in Latin characters. Also, we Maltese people are Latin and we speak like Spanish/Italian people rather than Arabic. I hope you pick Maltese :D

There's a guy on here named StrapsOption who apparently REALLY wants there to be a Maltese course. I think he said that he's not quite fluent, but he knows a fair bit of the language. He's applied several times and done a lot of interest posts and such.

He also made a "Duo goes to Malta" post. That post alone made me want to try Maltese :)

This honestly sounds like a fantastic idea. I want to learn Arabic, and Italian should be pretty easy for me with my Spanish level (my actual level of Spanish ability, not my DuoLingo level which isn't really reflective thereof). It might be fun to chain Spanish to Italian to Maltese to Arabic.

Thanks for your offer. It's a pipe dream, but maybe I could ladder from Portuguese to Italian, then Italian to Maltese, and finally from Maltese to Arabic.

Here I was planning to learn French or German, and now this news of a possible Maltese course has me leaning toward Italian.

I've gotten into Italian recently, and (though not as much as Maltese) I like it a lot.

So Maltese is somewhat of a link between European languages an Arabic?

It's mostly Semitic, but with many Italian and some English influences. So yes, you could say that.

https://www.duolingo.com/RebeccaButtigieg

I guess you could say that. We're considered latinos though because one of the native languages is Italian

That's a fantastic idea! For me, the prospect of learning a language without a Latin alphabet (like Arabic) is quite daunting, so having a language available that bridges the gap somewhat would be awesome! Thank you so much for offering this opportunity to us!

https://www.duolingo.com/RebeccaButtigieg

No, Thank YOU for the support :) Learning languages without latin alphabet is not as hard as people make it seem. I once wanted to learn Japanese and learned Hiragana and Katakana, and Korean ( That was the easiest alphabet because you can learn it even in like an hour) and Hebrew ( I kinda gave up on this one but I do know how to say the alphabet ). I guess if you focus and really want to learn, you can do it. P.s. I learn languages for fun but never become fluent :P
