Irish Music! (Let's do an Irish Party ;) )

Dia daoibh!

This discussion (or group) is for all fans of Ireland and Irish learning people here on Duolingo ;) I thought founding a group like this could be interesting and something completely new. And what could be better than rewarding yourself after a completed Irish Skill with something Irish? So, post your favourite pieces of Irish music or dance and let's have a bit of fun with nice conversations, music and a warm atmosphere. :) A Guinness anyone?

Go mbeire muid beo ar an am seo arís!

This sounds amazing! I am obsessed with Irish culture, although I only know a bit about their music and dance. After all, I am an Irish Dancer (who doesn't even live in Ireland, but whatever :D). I have a few soundtracks I love, will definitely post them in a bit. :D

Hey, welcome! I love Irish dancing - I'm not a professional but I can do a bit by myself :) Oh, and talking about Irish Music - I'm a huuuuuge fan of Chris de Burgh as well!!! <3

I'm not a professional either, I'd like to be but not sure I will ever have time! :D

Haha, well, we dance best with a few Guinness intus! :D

Also very beautiful music :)

songsinirish.com has a lot of stuff I really like, and several versions of some, as well. There is a whole bunch of traditional/folk stuff, plus then some performances of current pop music done as Gaeilge. They even have a little Christmas section, although we're now past that season. I would also definitely check out the few Scottish Gaelic songs on there. The first one isn't particularly to my liking, but I very much enjoy the other two.

I think you should try and make this into a Sticky post.

What is a "sticky" post?

Under the Discussion tab, look under Popular and you'll see lots of Sticky posts. It says "Sticky" on them and they stay there. There are lots of sticky posts by the Dutch and Irish teams.

Yeah, I've seen those, but what does the "sticky" itself mean.... Like, I used to think that it meant they had some sort of javascript in them or something...

It means that they're "stuck" to their position at the top of the list.

Oh! I get it. Thank you!

Cór Thaobh a Leithid from Gweedore are my current faves and I love the way their lovely Donegal accents come through in the songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcxNfm-siL0

Love those harmonies.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone!!! :)

Hey everyone! Just wanted to mention that I finally climbed the Irish tree! Yay! ___

Merry Christmas to everyone around here, now I've been on Duolingo for one year and finally climbed the Irish tree! So let's celebrate the cold season of the year with some warm music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMqshky1XDQ Nollaig shona daoibh!

Great! I like this idea! (:

Mícheál Ó Domhnaill (RIP), with Kevin Burke on fiddle and Gerry O'Beirne on 12 string. http://youtu.be/al9-3mW6zw8

By the way, there is a German band as well called "Santiano" - don't know if you ever heard of them, but they sound pretty Irish too, and their fiddler is a true Irishman, too! ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtLnd9HYpAw

No problem, sharing music is always cool ;)

Haha, this is only based on a first listen, and I'm by no means perfect at German, but I'm pretty sure that song is about them being out of rum and only having water so they have nothing to drink.

In any case, they do have some "genuinely" Irish stuff, too, like Molly Malone. Also, as a violinist myself, I really appreciate the fiddle.

Well, thank you for turning me onto these guys! Their German/Irish mix is perfect for me right now, and besides that I just find them really entertaining.

Right, dear, exactly! ;) And the crew is going to mutiny ;)

  1. Mary O'Hara's vocal control was beautiful, and I love the way Irish sounds in her songs. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh1G9icQT8c
  2. Clannad's version of Siuil a Run is my personal favourite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZP-4B7kHqA
  3. Mo Ghile Mear is stirring no matter who sings it.

Oh my :O Mary sounds tremendously awesome!!! What a beautiful voice... Brings tears to my eyes :'( Clannad is definitely cool, and true, Mo Ghile Mear will always be a beautiful song... it's one of my favourites, too, together with Teir Abhaile Ríu, Baidin Fheilimi and Trasna na dtonnta :) <3

You should listen to this as well, Maria McCool is so soothing!
