"La niña es triste." should be accepted. The question doesn't specify whether she is temporarily sad or just an essentially sad person.

I agree... although the English might have been worded differently. the "default" probably should use estar, but ser seems perfectly acceptable.

Jw, I don't think "sad" (triste) is translated the same as "fear." One can have fear, but would not "have sad."

I think a way to say that is: Me siento triste, "I feel sad," or Soy una persona triste, ("I am a sad person.") or A veces, estoy triste, "At times, I am sad." Native speakers, please let me know if my opinion is correct. :-)
