Why can't one say, "On that island stand windmills." It is still grammatically correct English...

"Op dat eiland staan er windmolens." is possible too. :)
Would "Windmills stand on that island." be correct?
It is not correct. The 'staan' in this sentence just shows a state of being somewhere, so it can't be translated to 'stand' in English. Some other words like 'liggen, zitten, hangen' are also like this.
I think it is correct to write "There are windmills standing on that island" no?
