I really wish duolingo had been around when I was home educating my children. What you are doing is fantastic.
I'm not a teacher, although I do tutor Chinese at the local Confucius Institute. I tried the Schools feature to track the learning progress of my family members, especially my sister's. Her school requires all the students learning French to go on Duolingo. It has become part of their official curriculum. After observation, here are two suggestions I have to raise:
-
Allow students to enroll in multiple sessions. Right now, my sister's school is not using the dashboard to track their students' progress, but some day they may. And as her brother, I would also like to know how she is doing at school. Alternatively, different language teachers at her school may want to track her progress in different language courses, for example, both French and Spanish.
-
Create a separate place for students to comment. I'm not quite sure how you can do this, but I know the problem is there. Children don't know the forum regulations, and may leave spam comments when they get bored, especially when they are forced to use Duolingo by their school teachers. To avoid clutter, or at least to reduce the workload of forum mods a little bit, the educators should be allowed to moderate the comments/posts of their students. It would be perfect if there would be a place for educators to follow all the activities of their students. This may also help educators answer their students' questions more quickly.

In response to your second suggestion, your students' email address and name on the dashboard are linked to their profile. Therefore, all you need to do is click on them and the app will take you to their profile where you can read their comments in their activity streams. It would be nice if there were a little notification (such as the little yellow bell) that would give us a heads-up that they have posted.

I'm a university student who is trying to help build a Language Studies program at my school and I'm using this to not only learn languages myself, but to encourage my friends to learn. Right now, using the Teacher function helps me see what my friends are doing. Here are some suggestions after the first week of me using it:
1) A reminder button to send notifications to students (individual and mass) to practice their language(s). 2) A way to minimize and sort students by language being learned. As someone who is learning multiple languages and who has friends learning different languages, sorting to see who is doing which language and their progress in it would be beneficial. 3) A progress bar for each student on the Dashboard. I can see the total xp for the week they earn, what lesson they've done, etc..but I'd like to see how close they are to leveling up in their language and maybe how far they have advanced down the tree. 4) A "recommended skill" button to suggest to students a specific skill to work on. For example, if I wanted my students/friends to work on Plurals or Food, I could click the button to let them know (individually and/or collectively) to focus on that lesson for the week
I realize that these suggestions might be a lot of work, but that's what suggestions are for. I recommend Duolingo to pretty much everyone who has ever told me that they had an interest in a language and certainly to all of my friends, especially ones in university/college. I love the work you guys are doing and hope to see more great things in the future! Thank you so much!

Yes! A teacher can disable social features in their settings next to their avatar in the main page. You can turn off their ability to participate in forums, activity streams and Immersion. :] Let us know if you need help, or access the Schools Help page (scroll down).

It is sad that this issue has to crop up… The "Discuss this sentence" screen is IMO very useful and I hate to see that students have to be banned from it due to "safety" concerns. Once we dreamed that the Internet will turn the whole world into one huge classroom. Seems humanity is not ready for it yet.
Thank you Duolingo team. I hope you continue working very good this year and always. I think you can add largest audios or short videos to see real conversations in real situations like a job interview, order food in a restaurant, make a hotel reservation, asking for an address, etc. For example we can listen an audio o watch a video and try to translation all phrases in the conversation, something like that. Another idea is we can record an audio and send it to a teacher o educator and the teacher listen the audio and send us a feedback about our pronunciation and fluency. Thanks a lot and congratulations for your kind support to learn other languages.
Hi,
Technology integration teacher (with experience of reading intervention, special education, and language learning) here. I wanted to share my thoughts, coming from the ESL side of things.
-
Multiple teacher per student support is a must. Just look at the massive disgust of teachers across the country when Google launched Classroom with only single teacher support. In my school an ESL student has (or can have) classroom teachers, Intervention Specialists, ESL coordinator, and an ESL aide who all want to be able to access student information for support. Google Classroom does a bad job at this, Khan Academy is an example of one that does a great job at offering multiple "coaches".
-
It would be massively more relevant and helpful for any K-12 language learner to have access to the education lessons early on. It is not good practice for me ESL students to be practicing words like vegetarian, when words like "whiteboard, desk, pencil, marker, gym, hallway, bathroom, water fountain" etc are pivotal, and allows them much sooner to understand and make sense of the words they here around them in their environment.
-
Spelling kills. I sat today with an ESL student trying to get him to write 3 sentences because he gets so stuck on spelling. You can ask many teachers, but when punish learners harshly for spelling. We have students (and there are adults out there too, some very bright) who are not great spellers. Duolingo will never be an option of a large portion of our ESL students because they will not be able to pass the lessons. Students with dyslexia or just a very poor sense of spelling. These kids are just cut off from Duolingo forever. I know on the iOS app you could tap words to put them into sentences. An option to set sentence writing to this style would work for those kids.
Insightful post, 1179175583. I teach in a rural, Title I school -- many students struggle with reading and spelling. Making the "tap words" feature available across all platforms would be a most-welcome upgrade (especially at the Basic and Intermediate skill levels) and would provide much needed support for struggling students. We introduced Duolingo one week ago and already students are reciting the basic phrases just for fun, sharing Duolingo with family and friends, proudly showing me their progress and golden trees, and asking "Are we going on Duolingo today?" I truly hope the momentum builds -- my hesitation is: Will the struggling students lose motivation if they get road-blocked by spelling? It's important to remember that beginning learners should be held accountable for Recall and Recognition and much, much less for Production. Thanks!
Great response "1179175583" - Teamwork in teaching is going to be required in future classes. Mentoring may be one teacher, but on the whole we are moving to a collaborative world.
Audio interaction is a must in language learning, and frankly I would suggest all learning needs that socratic give and take. I would imagine Duolingo has some ideas or we may be able to link other resources, with more audio interaction. With great people like you suggesting changes, we will certainly advance our online teaching resources. ~Michael
I can finally stop my students from repeating easy lessons! Many of my students would decide to just repeat Basics 1 over and over again to meet their daily XP goals. I've now made it very clear to them that they will only get credit for assigned lessons. I've been waiting for this for a long time and it was great to finally see what lessons each student is actually completing. I have 60 students so it has always been difficult to keep track.
It's nice to see the new forum section here!
I do math tutoring occasionally and, especially in math, have found it really useful to be able to see how much time a student is putting into the work. So, perhaps we could see a running total of the time each student spends added to the dashboard at some point.
Ideally, it would also help to see when a student worked on things. I've had at least one student who would put a lot of time into his homework, but he did all of it at the end of the week when I was coming back to tutor him; naturally this didn't work out very well. So, something like this might help to pinpoint why a student might not be doing as well as the data suggests.
~~~~
Also, progress reports would be nice. Perhaps you already do that and I just have them turned off for some reason; if not, those would be useful from a teacher's perspective and for a student to receive each week. (Maybe they can set an optional goal to try to beat the amount of points they earned the previous week...)
This is my third year to use DuoLingo for my Spanish class. The first year I used it with my second year students. They all agreed that they learned more in that year than in the year before I discovered Duolingo.
One of the things I miss is the vocabulary list that was grouped by topic and lesson. I t made it easy to create vocabulary lists for my kids to double check before testing off line. I also miss the verb conjugation charts that were tied to each verb in the vocabulary lists. I used to be able to view the progress chart or tree and see where they were in completing the different sections. (Like knowing that one student hadn't completed the required topic by the test date.
I LOVE this program. My kids are able to translate more than ever before and have more confidence in their ability to understand and learn Spanish. The fact that you can use the phone app is also a great bonus.
Here are my suggestions:
-
could there be a generic letter print out available so we can send home a little letter with the student's username and password? I'm using this in an elementary school and am writing my own letter to send home explaining duolingo and how they can use it at home
-
could there be a class forum where students in the same class can comment?
-
for younger students I think they would like if the little owl or some little character is on the screen when they do lessons.
-
another activity other than just lesson or flashcards (especially something that feels like a game)
Thank you for making this program available for free! Keep up the good work!
I just want to thank the Duolingo team for such an amazing resource for teachers. My students are fully engaged and really enjoy using it. What I miss right now is to be able to merge two accounts so that I don't lose my progress and friends in my personal account. I don't know why I chose a different email address when I registered as a teacher :(
Thanks again Luis, Duolingo Dashboard and the Educators Forum are really fantastic. Suggestions:
- It would be really nice if teachers could unlock skills that may be pertinent to what they are doing in class;
- It would be nice if a little bell icon would light up next to students' usernames when they post in discussions;
- It would be useful if the date when they studied would be indicated next to what they did. This has been suggested by others, but I'm repeating the request as it's important. Or as an alternative, I wish DL would have a weekly progress bar graph displayed on people's profile. I have a script but it hasn't been working for a long time. :( The script also showed people's trees, which would be useful for me as an educator.
When you guys assess Duolingo, do you usually do a combination of progress on new skills and xp? I was doing just xp for awhile because duolingo schools didn't exist. I just gave students a meter to gradually color in and told them that the more new skills they added, the more their duolingo would correspond to what we were doing in class. (You don' t want to be stuck back on jobs when in class we are doing the subjunctive, you' d want to be also doing subjunctive for the extra practice.).
anyhow, now that there is duolingo schools, I see that doing basics 1 over and over again is more prevalent than I thought.
Please comment any means you've found for assessing well.
Thanks
I mostly measure students by their XP. I actually don't mind if they review a lesson multiple times. I assume that they needed the extra practice. Perfect practice makes perfect. Most students want to learn, they will get bored if they never make progress. I made a custom test for my students to take next week. It will be on the time lesson on up...meaning all of the lessons up to the time part. This test also helps ensure that students are moving forward. I hope this helps. Cheers!
I agree that they should be strengthening old skills, but I am seeing basics one done nine times in a row (on the phone so they are still earning 10xp per lesson) for a couple students. I am not OK with that! A Spanish 3 student should not be hearing el hombre, la mujer over and over. At some point they need to move on. That said, would it be possible to offer differing number of xp to students for strengthening a skill?
Ex: strengthening a gold skill = 0xp or 1 xp. Strengthening a skill with one bar missing = 3 xp with 2 bars missing = 5 xp. with 3 bars missing 7 xp with 4 bars missing = 9 xp. New skill = 10xp
Thanks
I am so happy that this is happening! I am an English schools worker, living and working in Germany. I teach classes from year 5 to year 10 and I've been telling my older classes that they should use Duolingo. Now I have a solid way to see that they are using it! I haven't got any student's on it yet, so I can't point out flaws or give any solid feedback, I just want to say thank you that this has been introduced!
I am a Spanish teacher currently I am teaching Spanish 3,4 and 5 at a high school level. Thank you for creating this great feature for teachers. In the future I would like to be able to see the type of grammar that students are practicing in each lesson and also if they are having difficulties understanding the topic. I progress report will be also a great help. Thank you again for creating a free tool for students to learn and practice a new language.
I just introduced this into my Spanish I classes today offering extra credit for leveling up a certain amount of times and challenging my classes to compete against each other for the most levels completed. However, I have already run into one major problem, one annoyance, and another problem:
1) Students tried to "cheat" by testing out of every level to earn a ridiculous amount of points (they used the Internet for answers). Well, now I can't figure out how to reset their account to zero so they can legitimately participate in our contests. Please have a way teachers can undo testing / work if they know students did it dishonestly. Or have a way users can reset their own accounts without eliminating their account or link to gmail and I'll have the students do that. (Or is there already a way to do this??)
2) Can there please be a quick and easy way for me to get from my own Duolingo home screen to the teacher dashboard? On one of the drop-down menus (preferably the one under my name) can it just say "Dashboard" somewhere?
3) As mentioned by many on this forum, we need separate links to teacher accounts for separate languages. One student wants to learn Italian, too, but I don't want her Italian lessons to count toward the Spanish class totals.
Trust high school kids to figure out how to outsmart the system already. :) Now please just help me outsmart them!
1) Have a serious talk with your students about the futility of cheating and the consequences. Cheating is like telling lies; sooner or later it will be discovered. Last year I caught a kid who was making enormous progress in XPs; he had found a way to "hack" DL through a glitch that occurs if one's wi-fi connection is lost in the middle of a lesson. He ended up with a zero on a big assignment and had to sit with his parents in front of one of our vice principals. If the same thing happened at university, they simply would throw you out.
2) In Chrome (Opera too), all I have to do is move my cursor into the address bar and type "d" and already the whole URL appears; click on it, and the browser takes you to the page. I can type 50 wpm but I never get to type even "dash;" the response is immediate! It takes much longer to use a bookmark.
3) I'm personally not bothered by seeing students' progress in other languages; there's enough info there for me to evaluate their progress in Spanish. I'd love to be able to see their trees as well as a bar graph of daily progress, but I've actually created a printable version that my students fill out weekly to show me where they are in the tree. I'll share that soon in a separate post.
Now that I see that the other languages are tallied separately from the Spanish I'm fine with them practicing other languages! I thought it would just have their tallies all together, I didn't realize a little heading would tell me what language they were practicing. Now that I see what it looks like on the Dashboard I can tally what I need to, so hooray for all languages! (Plus I'm thinking I might start using Duolingo to learn some Italian...it's always been a dream of mine to add that to my foreign language repertoire. :)
Good points.
-
Cheating, testing out.
Maybe you could set the extra credits just on a per-lesson basis? Two lessons or something? Resetting a tree: https://www.duolingo.com/settings/direction, then "reset or remove languages". However, caution (!), this removes the whole progress of a tree. -
Quick way to access dashboard.
This would be great. However, a bookmark to https://dashboard.duolingo.com would do the trick in the meantime. -
One students, many teachers.
Yes! Actually, a student can just subscribe to one teacher. If your students takes an Italian class and subscribes to that teacher, it automatically unsubscribes the student from your class. That I would even consider a major design flaw.
edit: typos, formating.
Hi there, my name is Laura and I am a student at the University of Michigan. I love using Duolingo and I believe it is a very beneficial site. While browsing the site, I noticed it is basically ran by the users when it comes to translations. I understand this is a way to keep the site running free of cost, but I sometimes feel unsure about some of the words I am learning because of this. For example, Spanish is a very diverse language among latin cultures, therefore it is generalized within the different Spanish’s but the user would not be able to fully communicate the language in all latin-based places speaking Spanish because some words are used differently then others and different things are called different names by different Spanish-speaking areas. How are the users sure of the learned languages and translations when they are being translated by its own Duolingo users? How accurate are the languages learned?
Thank you, Laura
Hi Laura,
Duolingo teaches a little less than 2,000 words of Latin American Spanish. It is not intended to cover all words a person will need to know in order to become fluent. Duolingo is best when combined with other resources, such as a class or other online resources, and when people utilize everything there is to offer (such as discussion, the Immersion and Words feature, as well as conversing with others via Activity). Some folks have finished their course and tested out of 2nd year university level language courses, some one year, some one term. So, personal factors come into play, such as ability to retain etc. for how much an induale will benefit. The official study showed that in 34 hours of study, Duolingo is the equivalent of 1 university semester. Source.
Many of Duolingo's course moderators are graduate students and I believe one requirement is fluency in both languages for the courses they are building. Additionally, the courses have a paid staff mentor, who is a language expert.
That said, errors happen just like with any other course. Once a course enters phase 2 (beta) it is released for public participation. At this stage there are often many errors because the course is still in the process of error checking. Once a course graduates to Phase 3, it is a full fledged course and it receives (someone please check my number) fewer than 3 error reports per 100 people happening across the sentence. Many of these remaining error reports are not viable reports. Even still, Duolingo continues to collect and process reports to continuously improve the courses.
While Duolingo teaches only Latin America Spanish, it accepts alternative dialects for answers.
I do not work in the Incubator, so some of my information could be off. Hopefully someone will correct me if that is the case. However, this is the information as I currently understand it. So, I hope this helps! :)
Thank you team and community for asking for and creating this feature! My name is Usagi and I'm a volunteer TA and tutor for first year Japanese students. I'm exploring the reverse course (ENG for JPN students) in preparation for the JPN for EN release. I'm very excited about the school feature and looking forward to using it to help the students. I'm loving it so far and looking forward to new developments. Here are a few suggestions I've gathered from around the forum:
- Collapsible progress by student name, month, week, day, and skill.
- Ability to zero in on area students are struggling most with.
- Organize via toggle: students most to least progress, least to most progress (according to their course).
- Moving the minus sign to somewhere less precarious. And giving it either an immediately clear label, or a hover label like the change language portal badge on the Home tab.
- Give students ability to remove educator--student autonomy over the flow of their information.
- Link website guidelines inside of of the school feature.
- Educator to set goal and students to see progress on goal and when they've met goal. (like the golding of a skill, but where a teacher sets the goal.)
- Chat forum for the educator and their students that is separate from the main forums so we can focus on the topics immediately relevant to our students
- Separate Immersion points from course points.
- Keep people from seeing my email when sent the link to join the course.
- Allow educators to know how far away a skill is from becoming gold.
- Small FAQ
- (Already possible( see Dashboard) A way to invite several students at once.
- Total XP column, and progress a daily/weekly progress until daily/weekly goal completion column.
Thank you for considering these suggestions :)
EDIT: For those interested, here is an unofficial School feature user guide.
Hi there! This could have been caused by an issue we resolved late January. If you generate a new link, your students' class should display properly. For the ones in class "German%203", you can click the checkboxes next to their names and then click on "Change Section" in the upper right corner. You should then be able to change their class name to "German 3". I hope this helps!
2780
sragerritsen and herrthomas we hope everything is working smoothly for you, please let us know if you experience any more issues.
Sometimes, special symbols in web links get encoded. The space in the class name is being translated into %20. The problem is that when duolingo picks it back up it has to check for the encoding, which Erdnuss seems to be saying wasn't done quite right but has now been fixed. I just checked it now and it looks good.
If you want to know more then you could look up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percent-encoding.
2692
I mean the other way around: one student, two (or more) teachers. For example, a students has a Spanish and a French class and two different teachers.
https://www.duolingo.com/comment/6345085
edit: as a "student" you only have one option to subscribe ("share")
edit: and at once does not imply clicking a link/button several times.
You can generate the link and send a regular BCC email to several students at once. Since you currently need to know their email addresses anyway (which maybe isn't the best thing either) that shouldn't present a problem.
Agree on an option for a student to have several teachers. That would be useful.
2692
If I haven't missed it:
-
subscribe to more than one teacher/class (edit: already mentioned below by @Z.Shan)
-
support on mobile devices for teachers (edit: dashboard)
Also: email address revealed is a killer-feature for personal sharing. I know this is for teachers/schools. But doesn't this apply there, too?
Can we make a BUTTON to add students to our sections? Right now they have to go to settings and it is complicated... Here are the directions i am giving to my followers:
How to join Cada Dia Spanish on Duolingo:
Go to My Profile > Settings > Progress Sharing (or use this link) https://www.duolingo.com/settings/observer
Share progress with: CadaDiaSpanish@gmail.com
Section or Class: CadaDiaSpanish
I put together a user guide, you can give it a try HERE. It's a bit rough around the edges, but, hopefully it helps. :)
This is sooo helpful, thank you. My whole school is using Duolingo and this year I bought a trophy for the Duolingo champion. I made some certificates but it would be nice to have a template with the logo. One comment: one of my very clever student cracked the system and managed to see all the answers! There must be a loop hole. Also, is there a way to stop students to spend their time on the discussion button instead of doing their work?
I teach Sp 9-12 and celebrate this new feature. While checking my Facebook found this link about 11 channels to learn Spanish in Youtube, none of them was Duolingo! We need to establish this community in Facebook too, gee. http://www.fluentu.com/spanish/blog/learn-spanish-on-youtube/
Thanks for the link.
There are already several FB Duolingo groups - here's the link to the Spanish one : https://www.facebook.com/groups/DuolingoSpanishLearners/?ref=ts&fref=ts
I am so grateful to have found this website, I have use other programs in the pass but Duolingo has solve most of ours problems. I teach at a private school where there isn't much funding and the computers are limited. So I love the fact that the students can download this program on any device and use any type of headphones. Programs that we've paid for in the pass does not give us the amount of options that Duolingo provides. Best of all students love it cause its fun. I am a new language teacher and this program helps students reiterate what has been taught as well as help me give out assignments. Thanks so so so much. Duolingo has been a life saver. What I would like to see is, the amount of hours a students spent on their assignments and an option to learn Japanese.
I appreciate the expanded ability to filter students and languages. Thank you.
2 suggestions:
-
Can we separate and filter students by Last name as well. Presently, I am making them all change their names to LastName, FirstName format for ease.
-
Can we get an export option. That way I could possibly manipulate data how I please.
Just something else to think about-- I am using the Spanish to English with Heritage Speakers and they are loving that they are learning English. Many are recommending Duolingo to their Spanish speaking family members to learn English at home as well. Targeting and accommodating English Language Learners (ELL's) could take duolingo out of foreign language classrooms and into Core Subject language arts classrooms. I am recommending it to our ESL teachers. Kudos to you guys.
It's called Duolingo Test Center. You can find it at https://testcenter.duolingo.com
There's a web app, as well as apps for iPhone/iPad and Android. There's also a short video explaining the idea.
First of all I must thank you team! I'm teaching Japanese in China, in fact, most of my students do not love English ,Because in China , we have to study it hardly from very early time.So students try to learn their favourite things except English,.But as a teacher,I always chat with those kids,and tell them the importance of the English in the work or further study,although they have knew it clearly. Now I can show them Duolinggo,and let them learn their favorite Japanese and English at the same time,it's really a good way for my lovely students and me! That also make me realize the importance of Everyday-Listening .
I am Portuguese as Second Language's teacher in Brazil and teach to the Middle School, in School of the Nations. I'm using Duolingo in PSL classes for four weeks, and students are more interested and engaged in our classes. They are using the DL even when we do not have classes. I am so happy with the results. I am learning about the Dashboard for Educator yet. In same time, I am learning English with Duolingo, and I like it so much. Thanks for all!
Good morning everyone, My name is Angel Castaner, and I am an ESL teacher in the Washington, DC area. At the moment I am teaching advanced level reading and writing to a great variety of students, and am constantly looking for new ways to incorporate technology into the classroom.
I've recently completed two language trees on DL (German and Italian) and absolutely love the ease with which one can improve their language skills. For this reason I was hoping to include Duolingo into my teaching, but I've encountered a problem I was hoping could be addressed.
In short, I have an extremely diverse group of students from all over the world, which means that for some, the prevailing Native Language ---> English model would be unavailable. What I would be interested to see is a "English ---> English" tree, where the goal would not necessarily be learning a new language, but improving skills within one. Explanations could be posted in simplified English to get students thinking about grammatical structures and proper word order and sentence structure. Is this possible? Does anyone know if something like this already exists? I look forward to hearing back from you all!
Angel
I don't. Not unless there is a course that goes from a language they already know to English. Here is a list of all courses in all phases on Duolingo (Students can begin using a course once it hits Phase 2 (beta ) It will be have more mistakes than a course in Phase 3 though. https://www.duolingo.com/courses/all
Hi steph! Please check out the newest version of Duolingo for Schools launched today. It should be much easier to switch between views! :)
Hola. I teach pre-K through high school Spanish 2 (9th grade). I use Duolingo as a regular homework requirement and would LOVE it if Duolingo would somehow notify me with bells and whistles when a student finishes all lessons/skills on the Spanish tree. I have had four students complete the tree in the last month and I was not aware that they finished. (They came to class and told me, but I didn't know via the Duolingo dashboard.) I like to recognize them for this awesome accomplishment but need to know when it occurs. I teach 150 students so it isn't reasonable that I can individually track each of their trees. Mil gracias.
I've been using Duolingo as required homework practice for my Jr High Spanish students. It is an awesome tool! Thank you for making it available! Every Monday I print their reports to track homework credit. A couple weeks ago I didn't get my weekly reports on Monday, and you Duolingo wizards got that glitch worked out for last week's reports. However, today I don't have reports again. Could you help me get a printable option for weekly reports? Printing the dashboard reports weekly would be ideal.
2780
Yes! On this page you can hover over each class and you'll see a tiny gear icon show up on the bottom right of the square of the class. Click on it to rename the classroom. :]
I use this in my language classroom and would love to see an option to pause mid lesson. Many of my students have complained about losing work due to spotty connectivity or needing to stop in the middle of a lesson for whatever reason. They have all be redirected to start the whole lesson from the beginning, and get frustrated when the whole motivation is to make progress and count XP points.
I really love this site. I use it as a center in my Spanish class, and my students really like it! They see their progress in their speaking and understanding of the language. There is only one question I have. Is there a way to send a class message? I have over 100 students and it is hard to message each one. I was wondering if there could be a tab to sent a class message for the whole class to be able to read, and the teacher only has to send one message. let me know if that is already in place, and if it is not in place, it would make communication with the students a whole lot better. Thanks for this site!
We do not offer a way to message all your students at once via Duolingo right now. Could you elaborate on the suggestion and give us an idea of what type of message you would like to use that for? Thanks! :]
Is there a limit to the number of sections I can have? I have three successfully completed and number 4 is not showing up. Most of us would need five - seven sections for schools. This is a very interesting tool for us - particularly for differentiating learners. It will never be the core of my classroom teaching - but might well transform my classroom time into real spoken language practice which is not as well accomplished by Duolingo.
I am an ESL and Russian language teacher. I just started using the dashboard for my ESL 1 class. The student's reaction has been very positive. They like seeing their native languages as the site language.
Here is a question. I have 2 students from Georgia in my ESL 1 class. The have some knowledge of Russian and are also enrolled in my Russian 1 class. I made Russian their site language. How do they type responses in Russian?
Otherwise, thanks for a great resource!
On a Mac you can easily change the keyboard language; look for an icon at the top of your screen next to the clock. If they are already familiar with the QWERTY keyboard, have them select Russian - Phonetic. In Windows 8.1, look on the lower right. You can find a brief tutorial by just googling "changing the keyboard language in (add your OS)."
Thanks Duolingo for making the school feature. :) This has made it so much easier for me to track the progress of my students. I teach Spanish in Norway, so I hope it will one day be possible to learn Spanish via Norwegian, but learning via English works fine for now.
However, I have encountered a problem. When the students click the link I have generated for my group they don't always arrive at the Progress tracking site. They have to manually click it via settings and then the info in the link is already filled in, but it's not possible to click Save changes before they write something and then erase it again.
As a suggestion I miss being able to sort by the different categories at the top, like xp points and name. Also I wish it wasn't possible to do the same lesson over and over or that I would be able to delete the points they get for doing the same lesson several times.
Thanks again! I'm looking forward to the new developments on Duolingo.
I started doing duolingo with one class through duolingo.com. I asked my students to send me their e-mail address so I could send an invitation from my account. They started following me, I am following them back, this way I can see their progress. So far I have seven students. Then for my other class, I did it through dashboard.duolingo.com. I did it using my phone, the screen is little so I missed how to do the different sections, and I ended up creating three for the same class. So far I have three students. I think I will have to give directions again to this class, because I asked them first to go to duolingo.com and look for my section name, they could not find me. Now I have the link for this particular class on the school website; I am also advising them to go to dashboard.duolingo.com and look for my section name in case the link doesn't work.
I would like to start assigning weekly Duolingo homework for my middle school students. Does anyone have any sugguestions on how many XP points or levels for them to reach? I'm still not completely clear on how someone move from one level to the next, so it seems like having them complete 50 XP points per week seems reasonable and doable... most have already started so are on different lessons. Thanks!
Hi BBeLCJ, do you mean they are using an app? If they are unable to send you an invite to view their progress, you can email them a link where they can click and accept your offer to view their progress via email. There are instructions in this User Guide ^_^
Hello all! I'm a new teacher at my school and I've decided to pilot Duolingo with my French students. :) I'm trying to use it in the same way that my fellow English teachers use Membean (for those of you who know about this awesome app!). So, I'm leaving my students with some simple requirements: get a minimum of 70 XP per week in at least 4 different skills.
On the teacher dashboard, it lists the weeks from Monday to Sunday, so I set their assignment to be due by Sunday, but in reality the teacher dashboard resets to the next week on Sunday! :O That's extremely confusing considering that it's linked to dates! Some of my students have worked on Sunday assuming that that day counts towards their goal (& I assumed that also based on the way the dashboard lists the weeks)... Is there a way to fix/change this so that it is more transparent?
Merci! :D
2692
You get an email report every Monday. I assume this also contains all of the last Sunday. On the dashboard, you can select the week(s) before (upper right).
Ah!!!! That makes more sense. :P
I still think that Duolingo should give us the ability to change when we want our dashboards to reset. :) What if a teacher wants their students to finish their XP by Friday? There's no way to change it currently.
Having a time zone feature is definitely important! :)
So in order to experience Duolingo as my students are experiencing it I started to learn Italian and I have some critiques to offer. 1) Love the picture choices, that's a great format because they see pictures, hear the language, plus it is easy to get right. 2) I got SO frustrated with the "Select the missing word" and "Listening" questions because there are NO resources for you to look anything up and they are SUPER picky about spelling. If I miss even one little "i" not only do I not gain points, but I'm knocked back on my total. I actually gave up after a while because I was getting so mad. I kept getting listening question after listening question, I could not figure out how to spell anything, so I lost so many points I was basically back to the beginning. Like I said, I quit in frustration. Please either have less of those questions, provide some sort of dictionary (like the word hover that you offer with the typing ones), or don't make me lose points when I get things wrong! Or if a student is failing miserably at these types of questions give them less of these types of questions. Grrrrr! 3) That's my overall gripe--that students lose points when they get answers wrong. It's so disheartening. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT LOSE PROGRESS FOR GETTING THINGS WRONG, THEY SHOULD JUST NOT ADVANCE. This is my biggest frustration and my biggest piece of advice. 4) The lesson rarely actually taught me the words I needed, it just expected me to know them. A listening or translate question would pop up with verb forms I'd never seen before, there were no additional resources on the page, and I'd be penalized for guessing incorrectly. How can I learn it if I'm never presented with the material first? There should be a way to through the vocabulary of the lesson before you start having to answer questions about it (possibly getting points for going through it), or have a lesson-specific pop-up dictionary always available. 5) Overall waaaaay too much of an emphasis on perfectly correct spelling. I have special education students who are not good typists or spellers but they know what things mean. More multiple choice, matching, pictures, etc. questions would be appreciated so ALL students can use this resource.
My name is Arthea and I just won't to say Thank you Guy's very much, I think Duolingo is the best way to learn a language and it's free, I'm going to be traveling in the near future so I won't to know the languages of the countries that I'm going to be traveling to and so this is the best way for me. I plan on being fluent in all the languages I attempt to learn, thank you and may God bless y'all
I'm newly a French teacher (after years of music/directing), with one class of 24 middle schoolers in HS level French I... When I set up my school account here, the invite I got in my school email said welcome to learning Spanish? I did go back and add "French from English" to my profile, but how do I make sure the link I generate to invite students is linking them to the right option, the French from English?
I think they individually choose what language to learn. All my students are in a single class, and we have English from Chinese, English from Japanese, English from Spanish, and Spanish from English. Some even signed up for German from English or Italian from English in addition (not as part of my class, but on their own profiles).
Hi everyone! I'm a middle school ESL teacher in Nashville, TN. I have been letting several of my native Spanish speakers use Duolingo to practice English in class. I have a problem though. For the ones who attended school in Latin America, they can read and write Spanish, and thus fully participate in English Duolingo. For the ones who were born here in the U.S. but speak primarily Spanish at home, almost none of them can read Spanish (SO SAD!!). Does anyone else have this problem? I let them sign up with English accounts to learn Spanish; even though they already speak Spanish, I want them to read it--even though they're in my class to learn English. Can anyone else relate or give suggestions? Thanks!
Could you have them do English to Spanish? I have my heritage speakers doing that in my Spanish class. Even though they speak Spanish, this program is helping them with the reading and writing. The translation activities builds their English and Spanish at the same time. I had them start with the placement test.
HELP!
I'm trying to set up a class on my Duolingo Dashboard, but many students are not appearing when they clicked the link I generated for their section. I created a "fake" account to try it out myself (I thought they just were clicking "cancel" instead of "allow"), but I couldn't get my fake account to appear in my real teacher Dashboard either- I tried both clicking on the generated link and manually adding the progress sharing under the settings.
Anyone else have this problem or have an idea of how to fix it? Thank you!
Many of my students had to click the generated link twice for me, one time to make their account and then a 2nd time to link that account with mine. Try having the students just click that generated link a second time after they've made their account and see if that works. (When they click the link a second time they will need to "accept" or "agree" or something so that you can follow them.)
I am super confused on how I log in to my the dashboard. I put in my username and password but cannot find my students! It just shows me as a user. I have it bookmarked at school but not at home and I cannot see their progress.
Also, I have had no success in receiving support. Has anyone else ever tried to e-mail for certain problems and received a response?
Hi Oxandale, I'm not a tech but I did put together an amatuer userguide if you want to check it out HERE I hope this helps!
You can change your students' privacy settings in your Schools dashboard so they cannot access forums, post on user stream. You can also block Immersion for them. Check out the Schools help page and scroll down to "What privacy features are offered?"
We temporarily switched users with large classrooms back to the old version, since the dashboard takes a long time to load when there are more than 100 students. We are currently working on making it faster and should be able to switch everybody to the new version towards the end of the week. Sorry for the inconvenience!
I am so excited this feature is being added! I tried using duolingo for my Spanish classes. I was a great review at first for my Spanish 2 but I felt it started off really advanced for a beginner. For me, I wish I could put the levels in the order I wanted them or type in a small item I am covering and a bubble be generated for me.
I have 4 500 lingots. I would like to donate these to the school course to reward young students when a teacher deems it appropriate. The logistics would appear to be a nightmare though! Three keystrokes to give one lingot away - 13 500 keystrokes in total. And who would the recipient be?
I am also willing to help here as a tutor - but only with Dutch, English and Portuguese.
2532
Hi, my old friend from my earlier days here! My problem is where to send these lingots. They need to be shared between the schools. I will leave it up you Mods to decide. You are welcome to take the 4 500 lingots from my profile and use them as you like. Tchauzinho meu amigo!
That is very kind! I will make sure to distribute them to teachers whenever I see them making posts.
In order to do that though, you will need to give them to me using the technique I mentioned above. :)
Also, did you previously have a brown bunny icon? I know the name, I just can't place the current icon. Hello!
2532
There must be a better way to get these lingots to you! Duo transfers five and then I have to begin again!
Hi everyone! I love using duolingo myself, and have used it to improve my German since moving to Switzerland. I teach at a primary international school and would love to use it with my class. However I am stuck with the email addresses, as my students are too young to have their own. Is there any way to make a class account without them having to use their email to confirm the link?
2780
Hello krista.keller! right now the students need to have their own accounts in order to be tracked by you. And to have an account, they need to sign up with an email address. We realize this a common issue for elementary teachers and there are ways some people have found to work around it.
Secret workaround:
You can create student accounts by adding a + symbol and characters after it, between your name and the @ symbol. For example, let's say you have a student called a student called Maria B. in your 2015 class. If you have/create a gmail account called myname@gmail.com, you can add her to your class by creating an account using the email address myname+mariab15@gmail.com
Advantages of doing it this way:
-Students can create accounts without having an email address
-Teacher gets all emails and notifications (however, students do not get reminders)
-Teacher can help students recover lost passwords
-Teachers can always pass student account to student/parents once they leave their class (pass on account to new email address)
We know this is not an ideal solution, but it might help teachers in your situation who want to use Duolingo as soon as possible. Good luck and let us know how it goes! =]
Thanks Duolingo, this is a great program, but I need your help. As an educator it would be great if I can find articles to assign to my students no matter what the level. I found the tutorials on Immersion to be lengthy and overwhelming and was not sure where or how to have them start the articles. Also since I have students learning different languages, is it possibly to have the same article translated into different languages? Thanks for your help
They do not mean anything specific, they are just different images picked for the icons. :]
Hi, I am an instructor teaching a group of English language teaching (ELT) students in Cyprus. I am learning Spanish. The group I am teaching will be English teachers in a few years and to get them understand how it feels learning a new language I added them to my dashboard as Spanish language learners. We are experimenting with the dashboard feature and who knows maybe when they become teachers my students will continue using Duolingo with their students supporting their English language learning ...
We'll look into the data issues!
Also, it is currently not possible for your students to see the same report that you see unless they share progress with themselves, as Usagiboy7 said. However, this will remove them from your dashboard, as students can only share progress with one person at a time (for now). As the dashboard evolves, there will almost definitely be some sort of data export option.
A data export option would be dynamite for me - I have almost three hundred students on the platform, and the ability to export study history using .odf, .xls or .xlsx format would be really useful.
Similarly, some of my students do two or more foreign languages - it would be really great if they could share their Spanish progress with their Spanish teacher and their English progress with me.
In any case, still loving the aplication - great work!
They are able to share progress with themselves just as they were able to share progress with you. ^_^ Here are some instructions for navigating the Schools feature if necessary. I am nearly done updating it. I should be done by tomorrow.
Voice Comments on Duolingo
One of a few features I miss from LiveMocha is the ability to record comments.
(I noticed tonight how helpful that would be with the Turkish "su soguk" that Selcen Ozturk says, in comments, is not enunciated correctly. That is good to know, but even better would be if she could then record the phrase for others to hear.)
As a teacher I would like it if my students could record short speaking practice phrases or immersion selections for me to listen to and the ability to record myself in reply so they can hear any differences I may want to point out to them.
I created a dashboard account for a group of independent Norwegian learners so that when the Beta is developed we can monitor the progress of the entire group as a way of encouraging each other. In order to do this I want to allow all of the "students" to have access to the dashboard account so that we can all check in on each other at anytime.
Is there any reason that this would not work? I.e. Will it be an issue if multiple people log in to the user dashboard at the same time?
This was the easiest way I could figure out how to create a duolingo learning team with everyones info all in one place. Before I distribute our group's info to all of the users I just want to make sure that this method will work!
Thanks!
Technically, this is possible. But like any other internet service, I would recommend against sharing usernames and passwords, as people can always change the password and create headaches.
A safer alternative would be to utilize the leaderboard on the home screen. Students can add/follow each other by clicking on each other's profiles and they will appear on each other's leaderboard.
Hello. I wish there was an easy way to search your forum posts, as someone else may have asked this, but I don't see one, so here I go with my question/concern , , ,
My colleagues and I have just started assigning Duolingo as homework in the past month. We ask students to complete a certain number of lessons each week, which we track on the very useful Schools Dashboard. Just today, I have learned that students are cheating and "completing" whole lessons instantaneously by starting a lesson then turning off their wifi and clicking through the lesson with nonsense answers. When they turn their wifi back on, the lesson is shown as "complete". Students are "completing" multiple lessons and tests, which should take at least 10 minutes each, in 5 minutes time.
Please let me know if there is a fix for this. Otherwise, our use of Duolingo as an assignment may be over.
Thank you.
@KathrynHag, yes. You can have them reset their course through their Settings. By resetting, they will start at the beginning of their course again. They will be offered a placement test that will jump them ahead according to their knowledge level. Or, they can test out of individual skills along their way through the tree again. :)
I give them an xp number per week as part of the course. Depending on how much other work I am assigning them I require 40 - 80 XP points per week. You could also require so many lessons passed. I prefer XP points because then the perfectionists can practice already completed lessons while the ones who want something new are free to continue along the language tree. The dashboard tracks each students activity so you can document it or use it for the grade for that activity.
Please add English to the languages in the language drop down menu on the dashboard. I have French, Spanish, and English classes. I am using Duolingo with my French and Spanish classes, but am about to add my English language students and noticed that English is not in the drop down menu. Thanks. :-) Love the program, by the way!
Duolingo has a English for Japanese speakers course in beta. However, they've run into some difficulties with trying to reverse the course. More info about that here.
I am having a problem getting my ESL students onto my dashboard. Many of them have duolingo on their smart phone, but can't remember their passwords to log onto the computer. I can't send them the link because they don't have email addresses and many of them don't even have access to computers. It is easy to add a professor to share your progress once you log into duolingo via the computer. But, since they cannot do this, is there a way to share progress via the phone app? If there is, I could not find it. Thank you for your help!
I am a Spanish teacher and I am adding students to this app and tracking their progress. But to look at the lessons they have completed, I have to have completed the lesson myself to look at the words they had. I just created an account on this. What I am saying is, do I have to complete my Spanish tree just to see what my students are learning?
I was having the same problem and got together with other people here and we have created a Google Doc document with the content of the Spanish tree.
Here's the link to the discussion and document: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/6938091$comment_id=8206693
Hope it is useful!
Here's how you can move classes into sections (scroll down): https://dashboard.duolingo.com/dashboard_help
HI - I need some help. When last on Duolingo, I was getting an update of how many points my students were getting per week. I was giving them extra credit based on those points. Now Duolingo has changed their system. I cannot see the points and they are not sending me an update. If you hover over the green check a date pops up - I assume it is the date that the student completed the section. But I have a very trustworthy student who says that she completed 200 points recently but her most recent date says Feb. Is there a way to see it under the old system so that I can properly give our extra credit? Thanks!!
Hi there - we added the view with the green checkmarks as a way to explore how far along the skill tree each student in your class is. The date on the checkmark does indeed show when they student completed a particular skill. It does not replace the detailed list view though! If you need more detailed information, you can switch back and forth between the "course progress view" and the list view by clicking the button in the upper right. See this screenshot:
In the detailed list view, you can click on each student row to see a summary of their activity on Duolingo, so you should be able to see exactly where your student earned their 200 points.
As far as the weekly email is concerned, I checked out your account and it looks like our system blocked your email address. This can happen if your email provider marks emails from Duolingo as spam (at which point our system stops sending them). I fixed that and you should get your next email Monday morning. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Feedback:
The only homework I generally give my students is to practice their skills on duolingo. I tell them I am able to review their progress and use their current experience as their weekly participation mark. However, I can't quite do this any more since one of my students found out to cheat the system. He now has over 1000XP and gold levels because he figured out how to tamper with the coding. Also, apparently if you turn off the wifi and continue working on duolingo, every answer will be marked as correct not matter what. That same student figured out that he can keep his answers by turning on the wifi connection before leaving the page. He is now incredibly ahead of the class according to duolingo, but in reality, he has 0XP.
Also, is there a way to send a mass email to all my "followers" . I would like to be able to remind students of upcoming tests and such on duolingo.
2780
Thanks for the feedback, C.Hollick! Is this "cheating" while offline still an issue for you? Please let us know.
A couple of students found the cheats for turning on and off the wireless and it pushes them through with garbage answers and scores them as perfect. I am not sure how to "prove" that they are cheating and need some suggestions. As stupid as this sounds, they have put several hours into the cheating effort- which tells you what sort of goofs they are. It could be that their accounts may accidentally be deleted or blocked soon. Darn internet. Then they would have to start over. Can Duolingo 1) fix the cheat 2)send them a note saying "You are cheaters! Our records indicate...." Then I can take some stronger action.... Anyone else have suggestions?
I am not sure this will give you any concrete help, but maybe you will find it somehow useful. I think that I probably had a somewhat similar disposition to your students, once upon a time. My guess is that they find two things appealing about what they are doing: the emotional thrill of beating the system, and the intellectual challenge of figuring out how to do so. I don't think they are just "lazy", i.e. trying to put as little time in as possible (though they may not realize it consciously) because of the amount of work you describe. The tricky part is how to redirect their ingenuity into more productive endeavors.
For myself, I had two specific incidents that helped me: when I was in high school, we setup the first computer classroom. The teachers knew from my previous experience using the couple of individual computers that a friend of my and I would find the situation a challenge, so, they made us an offer: we could write a program that could be used for the class to take tests and we wouldn't have to do any of the regular coursework. However, we had to provide reasonable proof that the system was "unbreakable" by any other students, and we had to fix any bugs that arose in the first two semesters. Of course, we took them up on the offer, and it was a huge success - they played our egos perfectly, giving us the the opportunity to show that we could make a system that no other students could outwit, and in the meantime, we were so busy that we didn't have time to disrupt the education of the rest of the class.
The second incident was in my first year at college - a grad student who had taken me under his wing found me working away in the computer lab for several days and eventually worked out that I was decompiling a computer game so I could break the copy protection. He let me go at it for a while, then took me to lunch and asked me how much time I had spent, how much the game cost, and how much I made per-hour when I worked at the computer department. It was obvious that if I spent the time working, I could buy the game outright, and still come away with dollars in my pocket. If I recall correctly, I never did buy the game, because it wasn't nearly as challenging as breaking the copy protection, but I did come to realize that I should be more discriminating in the selection of challenging tasks I undertook.
The second example is probably closer to your case, and giving the kind of advice I got from my mentor is not always an easy thing, especially coming from a teacher directly to her student. The first example took place at a very specific moment, when the faculty had an opportunity that is rarely present.
One concrete thought I had: perhaps you could offer extra credit or something similar for students who can document how to beat the system in DuoLingo. In the course of working out the shortcuts, they will, necessarily expose themselves to the material, and to some extent (hopefully) lose the thrill of not doing the actual work since it will then be clear that you and they know that they have the capability to do so. It will also help you and DuoLingo with regard to preventing future bypassing of the intended course progress (I do hate to use the work "cheating")
Those are great comments and suggestions. As the mother of two male "gamers" for an extended time, my students seem stunned that I have a Steam account, play Mindcraft, and have access to GTA whatever edition. Scribblenauts in Spanish is one of my favorites. I wish more gaming software were available in Spanish! Disney Latino has some on line, but it is not geared towards beginner students.
This program is by far one of the better ones I have seen to date. And of course, the price is perfect!
As of now, I grade the students on vocabulary work on Duolingo with a paper and pencil complete what I learned to day. Keeping it simple while we work out all the bugs.
Thank you again for your comments!
Hello,
I'm really loving the Duolingo Teacher Tools - the programme just keeps getting better. I'm intending to roll the programme out with my colleagues at the beginning of next semester, and everyone who's been involved in the test programme is very happy with it.
One of the few difficulties we have had is getting the students to work on the collaborative translations, not just on the language training. Part of the difficulty seems to be that the translation material is only available on the website, and most of our students tend to use the mobile app. Might it be possible to incorporate the translation element of the programme on the app?
Secondly, Duolingo is partly a victim of its own success, as any texts we teachers publish on the platform tend to be translated by the community before our students can get to it - would it be possible to add a function to the teacher mode where we could publish a text for translation by a specific group that we are following?
As I said, I love the platform, and I know my students get a lot out of it. I think if I can get them to do more translation on top of their language training, it'd be even more useful. Thank you all very much for making this widely available!
2780
Thanks for the insights, MTaylor! How much do you use the translation feature vs the Duolingo language tree?
I'm afraid to say I've rather given up on the translation features - partly because they're not available on the app, and partly because when I put something on by the time my students have got to it it's often been translated by the wider Duolingo community. It's a real shame, as the language tree can get to be a bit repetitive for more advanced learners.
What I think would be really great would be firstly, to incorporate translation features in the mobile app, and secondly to have a way of assigning texts to specific groups. I don't know how technically challenging that would be, but if it were possible I'd probably aim for more of a 50:50 split, with weaker learners using the language tree and stronger learners doing more translation.
Hope this helps!
2780
It sure does! We Duolingo for Schools to be the best tool it could be, so this is super helpful. Thank you and please keep your ideas coming!
I'm in EFL myself, and I use a lot of stuff freely available from the "BBC Learning English" website. The new site is available here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/), and has some good stuff, but there is also an enormous amount of material in the archive, available here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/language/) - General and Business English, Discussion Skills, Pronunciation. In terms of other languages the BBC has some material available here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/), not sure how applicable it is in a classroom setting. Hope that helps!
I'm using the BBC series in class, Mi Vida Loca, and it has been well-received by students and myself. It has vocab lists you can print for each exericise and I've useed puzzlemaker (on the web) to make vocab reinforecement study sheets. It is a drama in Spanish that has18 episodes with lots of instruction embedded throughout .
Hello! I have been using Duolingo for about 4 months, and I think it's great. I'm having a problem getting it set up for my students, though. When they clink the link to join the class, they get a 404 message. What could the problem be?
Hi, I am a professor of secondary and university also, I have more than 8 years working with virtual education and truth Duolingo I feel great and I use in my classes with the DashBoard, would be excellent teachers we could raise or create your own lessons English spara our groups. Greetings from Colombia
I am writing because I have two questions:
As a teacher: It is possible to unlock the language that you teach so I can look at the content that is being taught on each lesson? Or do I have to go through the lessons and pass each of them by myself?
Is it possible to assigned or choose lessons and quizzes to students that already in my roster?
Great questions, Edehernand!
You can click on the individual skill icons in your dashboard view to see which words are taught there. Soon educators will be able to try out the entire Duolingo course for their students without unlocking the skill tree themselves, but this isn't something we offer yet. You can however unlock major portions of your course by clicking the padlock checkpoints to test out and skip ahead. When you create an account and start a new course, you also have the option of taking a placement test, which should unlock most of the course for advanced learners.
Many teachers assign their students a particular skill in the tree and give them a deadline by which point they should have completed everything up to that point (communicated in class or email etc). The dashboard can be used to follow up and track students' work towards milestones like these.
We're also eager to hear your ideas around this. What sort of assignment feature would you find the most useful for your purposes?
Hello Myra, Thank you for replying. It is great to know that someone is working diligently asking for input. One of the things that probably should be consider for Duolingo is for teachers to be able to pick and choose lessons for students. In addition, having access to the assessments and being able to modify, if necessary. This upcoming year, I am working with a school that is going full blended learning and I would like for instance integrate Duolingo to my learning platform; these are some of the things that I would need, but I am not sure if you have have the capabilities yet: - Direct link in - Single sign on - Data send back
I think that we are moving to new time education where teachers and schools don't want to be navigating through different sites to access data or resources.
Right now, the only way to do that is by giving them lingots through comments in the forums (like I just gave you). We are studying ways to allow teachers to encourage and reward students, as we know this is important for educators. :]
8Ashley - If you are trying to learn Spanish, we are organizing a large group web meeting in Duolingo to practice in a web meeting. Here is how to join:
We are always looking for new feature ideas, and keep an eye in this forum for those, so thank you for sharing! =]
I'm very new to Duolingo. I just found it a month ago and got permission from my school admin. to incorporate it. Very excited about using it in my Spanish 1 and 2 classes. However, I am limited in my tech skills and am very nervous about whether I can do it! I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their lesson plans, and/or ways that you integrate this into your classroom, as well as your grading system? Is there already a link for lesson plans? I have not found one, if there is.
I use Duolingo for my elementary students. They use iPads for 15-20 minutes of their 50 minutes per week of Spanish class. I created half sheets for each lesson that students glue into composition books. By writing in the English meaning for each Spanish vocabulary word, they are creating a resource for themselves. Once a month, students use these interactive notebooks to make sentences using gathered vocabulary from class time as well as Duolingo. I use TPRS to teach.
Yes, I give them a list of 10 words maximum. That's the most a lesson covers. Writing the English words helps in the learning process and helps them to remember when there are no word banks. So far, I've made about 60 lesson sheets. I created individual student accounts. Luckily at my charter school, all students are assigned an email address so that helped. Otherwise I would have created 350+ gmail addresses for their Duolingo accounts. I have nearly 500 k-4 students.
Hello - I have been using Duolingo on my own Ipad for the past year, but now that we have abandoned another software subscription service, I would like to implement Duolingo in my language class. However, our IT person is not in favor of setting up emails for our students. Is there any way of getting around this so I can still use Duolingo and monitor progress? Ideas? Suggestions?
You can create email accounts for each student on gmail. I had to do this for a couple of students since their school email address is for internal use only. So, 'forgot my password' won't work. Students do not need access to the gmail account information. You keep it along with their login and password in a spreadsheet. For Duolingo user names, I'd stick to first names dot school initials (John.EJB) for user name and unique password (like their phone number) for each student. These items should be readily available through a school database. I'd create a database to help it go faster. I did this for 350 students in 3-4 hours. To create gmail accounts, it'd use the Duolingo user name (John.EJB@gmail.com) and keep the password the same for each student since the teacher will be the only one accessing.
Hello PatriciaFoley1! Right now the students need to have their own accounts in order to be tracked by you. And to have an account, they need to sign up with an email address. We realize this a common issue for elementary teachers and there are ways some people have found to work around it.
Secret workaround:
You can create student accounts by adding a + symbol and characters after it, between your name and the @ symbol. For example, let's say you have a student called a student called Maria B. in your 2015 class. If you have/create a gmail account called myname@gmail.com, you can add her to your class by creating an account using the email address myname+mariab15@gmail.com
Advantages of doing it this way:
-Students can create accounts without having an email address
-Teacher gets all emails and notifications (however, students do not get reminders)
-Teacher can help students recover lost passwords
-Teachers can always pass student account to student/parents once they leave their class (pass on account to new email address)
We know this is not an ideal solution, but it might help teachers in your situation who want to use Duolingo as soon as possible. Good luck and let us know how it goes! =]
Hi! The placement test should put them in the appropriate place on the tree. You don't have to remove entire accounts if they missed the opportunity to take it. If you need them to take a placement test in an existing tree, you could remove the language and add it again (this will replace their previous progress). You can also have them "test out" at certain checkpoints in the tree to see how far they can get. If your Duolingo account is in English, try these instructions from the Duolingo Help page:
How do I skip the basics?
How do I reset my progress?
I hope it helps!
2780
You are correct, they have to reset their own progress. Teachers can monitor but not alter student progress. If they "reset" progress, it should allow them to take the placement test (no need to remove and re-add). Please remember while they will not lose their XP (points), they will lose their progress and have to start over. However, the placement test should open up the tree up to the appropriate place. :]
Hi! There are awesome features suggested by teachers and we investigate all of them to make Duolingo better and more useful. Did you know you can download a CSV file (spreadsheet format file) of your classroom? That could be re-ordered by name if you like, and even printed out if you like to make notes by hand. :]
2780
You can export the points as a spreadsheet. Once you are in your classroom view, select "Activity details" on the left column. There will be a button above the list of students that says "CSV" -- click on it to download the excel file. :]
Hi, have you experienced an inconsistency in the number of xp that different views give? My students have a goal of 100 xp per week plus a given number of skills to have completed. Their points on Dashboard don't match with what they think they have. For instance, everyone ended their first year with 3000 minimum but on returning found they had dropped. Also, they can show on their phones that they have one number but the dashboard doesn't match. Any thoughts?
2780
Hello! XP should be consistent throughout Duolingo; it should only vary depending on view (which week you are viewing). Could you send username(s) (and, if you can, screenshots) of that problem, and any other information you can think of (course/date/device setup) to teachers@duolingo.com? It helps if we can try to replicate or look in to the issue on our end, but we'd need more information than is shareable in the forum. We'll be expecting your message!
There is no Esperanto for Spanish speakers available yet. Please check out the current list of courses from Spanish here.
Hello! I'm using Duolingo with my 3-5th grade Spanish students. When they complete lessons at home, they receive fake euros that they can use to "purchase" items from my little store. It has been working great but lately students have been losing their progress in the app. They complete a lesson and receive the gold bars but when they reopen the app later, it appears that they have not completed the lesson. Any ideas on why this could be happening?
2780
Hello! Can you tell us more about this? I'd like to try replicating the problem on my end, but I'd need to know more details: what lesson/unit? what course? when was this and what type of browser were they using? how do you know they got the gold bars earlier? Sorry to ask so much, but it helps us detect the issue. Thanks! :]
It would be nice, but I have found that for French french-games.net has some excellent games as well as tutorials and tests. I use both.
2780
Good suggestion! :] Do you have favorite game, KellyninFontes? And have you been learning on Duolingo?
2780
Not at the moment, but we are aware that it is something teachers would like to do. Do you usually track XP, number of skills, or time spent?
@friendlyyak You can track what they do weekly by viewing your class ACTIVITY DETAILS and then clicking on the top right bar that says ALL TIME. This allows you to choose which week you'd like to see their activity. The reports run Monday-Sunday. I track days spent and lessons passed and practiced each week. I require my Jr High students to practice 3 days a week and pass a minimum of 6-9 lessons a week, depending on the student. Hope that helps. :)
Thanks emilybwilliams :) We have computer room lessons once a fortnight so it would be really good to be able to specify the exact period you want to look at (so it would cover say Weds til Weds 2 weeks later, the period of time between 2 IT lessons) but it doesn't look like you can do that can you?
2780
Hi! That seems odd. Can you give us more information? We'd like to know if your students who are not able to sign up are on a phone or computer, and if so, which browser they are using. Is it that the pop-up confirmation isn't showing up to them? Please let us know a little more so we can try to help! :]
2780
Thank you for the reply. Well, the pop-up should show up when they click on your invitation link. It is really difficult for us to try to replicate the issue here because we need to know as many details as possible (a reliable way to see this happening on our end).
If you would like to help us solve this mystery, please have your students take notes with exact information (what the link looks like, what browser, what device, what operating system, screenshots and how I recreate the issue too). Have a student try again from a completely different device and add to the notes. You can even take a screen video. Send those notes to us at teachers@duolingo.com. Fun science/tech/language project if they do it in their learning language. ;]
If you just want to get it done and fix the problem manually, have the students visit their progress sharing page from their profile and fill in the teacher's email and the name of the classroom. Let me know how it goes! :]
I use this in my French classroom and have my students create a weekly goal that I track. I would love them to be able to set a weekly rather than daily goal on duolingo. I would also like to know why their duolingo weekly progress restarted before 10:30pm Sunday night. They all created their accounts in EST and the progress should be set to reset at midnight Sunday, I believe. Lastly, for some reason, a lot of them have trouble seeing their weekly XP if they, for instance, do not have any followers. Is there a way to find this?
2780
Hi! We want to give teachers more and more control over how to split up the measurements, and intend to make that happen. I can see the value of weekly goal for a teacher, and I think it is worth considering. For now, are they counting their points manually, or are you using the weekly reports that are sent via email? What type of device are they using? Their XP for the past week should be on the right column, under the Duo coach and goal reached symbol.
2780
We already do! If a student practices the same skill over and over again, they get way fewer points than learning a new skill or refreshing a skill they haven't seen for a long time. We created this inspired by teacher requests. :]
I am not receiving weekly emails...? They are using their computers, but can't seem to see their weekly XP because that spot is taken up by Duo asking if they want to try to find friends. I am going in at the end of each week and reading their points on the teacher portal. Any response on the question about resetting the weekly XP before midnight Sunday?
2780
Hi! Please go to settings > notifications and make sure "There is an announcement" is enabled. Remember to save! If receiving announcements from Duolingo is turned off, you won't receive teacher emails. As for the other issue: in order to see themselves in the leaderboard, students need to follow at least one other person. That could be you, a family member, or a friend. They can search another user by typing in their username. Resetting the weekly XP is not possible at the moment. We will need to make some site-wide changes in order for that to happen and we are looking into how to do that. Thanks!
