Familia vs. familiar

What is the difference between these two words?

One question I was given was translate: It is a family dinner.

Why is the answer: Es una cena familiar instead of Es una cena familia?

It is a family dinner could be translated to "Es una cena de familia" or "Es una cena familiar". Both are correct, but the last one sounds more natural and i think it is most used.

familia is a noun and familiar is an adjective, in English both the noun and the adjective are "family"
